General Transp Tech II/III - Amarillo E-Way
Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a General Transportation Tech II/III to work in their E-Way Maintenance Section. The role involves performing moderately complex transportation operations and maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance, equipment operation, and traffic control while assisting the public during emergencies.

Responsibilities
Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures
Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites
Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products
Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required
Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic
Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations
Move/picks up litter and roadway debris
Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower
Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck
Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI
Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Qualification
Required
No education required
GTT II = 1 year experience
GTT III = 2 years' experience
Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis
Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Must have a Commercial Class 'A' Driver's License with an 'N' Endorsement at time of application
Considerable knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
Considerable knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
Considerable knowledge of The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Considerable knowledge of basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
Proficient skill in using basic mathematical fundamentals
Proficient skill in using of light and heavy highway equipment
Proficient skill in maintaining a safe working relationship
Some skill in following verbal and written instructions
Extensive Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work

Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing
Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations
