Accountant III

The City of Chesapeake seeks a highly skilled, collaborative, and proactive Accountant III to join our central Finance team. The Accountant III is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the City’s General Ledger and supporting timely and reliable financial reporting.

Responsibilities

Interacts with staff, departments, and/or external agencies to ensure accuracy of accounts, responds to inquiries, and provides accounting support
Verifies, monitors, and reconciles accounts
Serves as Finance Subject Matter Expert liaison to assigned departments
Reviews and posts journal entries for accuracy, completeness, and proper reporting for departments throughout the City
Manages reconciliations for 13 bank accounts, ensuring accurate and timely month-end and year-end closing processes
Assists with the preparation, review, and analysis of financial statements, schedules, journal entries, and disclosures for the City’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR)
Provides information and assistance to internal and external auditors
Performs related tasks as necessary such as developing new accounting policies and procedures
Performs other related duties as assigned

Required

Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field
A minimum of four years of related, full-time equivalent experience

Preferred

A master's degree in business, public administration, or a related field desired
Certified Public Accountant certification desired
