Senior Accountant

They are seeking a highly experienced Insurance Accounting professional to provide leadership and oversight to the insurance accounting team, ensuring compliance with GAAP and supporting executive decision-making through accurate financial reporting.
Responsibilities
Prepare, analyze, and distribute monthly insurance financial statements for executive management and the Board of Directors, including equity-method accounting for Life and P&C entities, agency commission revenue, and reinsured business
Compile and analyze financial data to prepare general ledger entries; ensure timely and accurate completion of standard journal entries in support of monthly close
Monitor and reconcile monthly accruals; participate in year-end accrual reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness
Perform variance analysis (actual vs. plan), identify trends, investigate discrepancies, and provide clear written explanations to senior leadership
Prepare consolidated financial statements in accordance with company accounting policies, GAAP, and statutory requirements
Provide technical accounting guidance related to insurance and reinsurance, including development of accounting whitepapers to support audit and internal documentation
Research and evaluate new accounting pronouncements, insurance regulations, and statutory requirements to assess impact and ensure compliance with GAAP and NAIC standards
Support internal and external audits, including preparation of audit schedules and coordination with auditors
Provide functional and technical supervision to professional, paraprofessional, and clerical accounting staff; plan, direct, and review team workloads and deliverables
Mentor and support Staff Accountants in maintaining effective internal reporting systems and controls related to expenditures, incentives, and reimbursable activities across business lines
Recommend staffing levels, workflow improvements, and departmental policies based on performance metrics and quality reviews
Collaborate with forecasting and planning teams to support budgeting and financial projections
Consult with department leaders on budget development, forecasting, and ongoing financial monitoring
Assist in the design and implementation of allocation methodologies to appropriately charge shared organizational costs to insurance operations via service contracts
Prepare, analyze, and report financial impacts related to special projects and strategic initiatives
Serve as a financial consultant to administrative and program leaders and represent the Finance department in cross-functional and multi-department meetings
Evaluate complex accounting systems, procedures, and internal controls; recommend enhancements to improve efficiency, accuracy, and compliance
Monitor changes in policies, procedures, programs, and regulations; update processes accordingly and train staff to ensure timely and effective implementation
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field required
Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in public accounting
Strong working knowledge of GAAP, statutory accounting, ASC 944, and insurance/reinsurance accounting
Preferred
Master's degree in Accounting or a related field preferred
At least 2 years of insurance accounting experience preferred
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred (upon hire)
