Assistant Dean for Advancement (Chief Advancement Officer)

Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership for the School of Public Health’s advancement program, partnering with the Dean and development colleagues to advance fundraising, donor stewardship, alumni engagement and external relations
Manage the daily operations of a team of advancement professionals responsible for building strong, mutually beneficial relationships between the School and external stakeholders
Provide strategic direction on a marketing and communications plan that promotes the School’s advancement objectives
Prepare budgets and forecasts for the Advancement team. Prepare and present quarterly and annual financial reports outlining trends, fundraising progress and gifts by type or source of funds
Provide counsel and staffing to the School’s Advancement Board and other related committees. Build strong and mutually beneficial relationships between the School’s Dean, faculty, staff and external audiences
Coach academic and administrative leaders across the School to be thought partners and advocates of advancement efforts
Build and sustain deep relationships with donors, prospective donors, volunteers and business and community leaders
Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and lead the related cultivation, solicitation and stewardship efforts, including preparation of proposals, agreements and supporting materials, in alignment with University prospect management practices
Develop and execute strategies to expand and diversify the School’s donor base, with a focus on securing major gifts and growing term funds and endowments
Partner with Development colleagues across the University of Washington to meet fundraising metrics, leverage campaigns and shared services, and maximize private support
In collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Health Sciences, the Dean and other University Advancement colleagues, lead campaign planning and readiness efforts, including a feasibility assessment, infrastructure development, volunteer identification and recruitment, prospect prioritization, internal communications, and case definition and positioning in support of School and University priorities
Ensure the effective implementation of campaign strategies and timelines, including coordinating stakeholders and aligning resources
Steward and build upon the success of past campaigns to strengthen donor relationships and position the School for future multi-million-dollar fundraising initiatives

Required

Bachelor's degree AND at least seven years of professional advancement experience in institutional development or advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts
Experience raising funds and partnering with a broad range of stakeholders including, individuals, foundations, government agencies and NGOs and the private sector
Proven commitment to higher education and extensive knowledge of fundraising principles, practices and industry trends
Ability to define and clearly communicate the University's priorities and vision
Ability to engage and build productive relationships with a broad range of constituents, including faculty, staff, and volunteers
Familiarity with marketing and communications strategies and experience managing or partnering with related functions
Demonstrated success as an inclusive and effective leader, able to articulate long-term vision, align strategy with values and inspire organizational energy
Experience providing direct supervision, including recruiting, managing performance, setting priorities, overseeing workflow and addressing employee concerns
