Director of AI-Driven Underwriting Technology (ALWAYS U.S. REMOTE)
i4 Insurance Talent is working with a tech-enabled Managing General Underwriter (MGU) focused on an AI-native strategy in the insurance sector. They are seeking a Director of AI-Driven Underwriting Technology to lead the development of a high-performing software engineering team and transform underwriting operations through innovative technology.
Responsibilities
Architect and galvanize a high-performing software engineering team from scratch, moving from zero internal staff to a functional, high-impact digital underwriting ecosystem
Transition the product lifecycle from outsourced to 'internally-owned,' maturing the ecosystem so the company can deploy proprietary insurance products autonomously
Optimize data usage by building robust pipelines that feed AI models, ensuring that underwriting decisions are backed by real-time, actionable intelligence
Orchestrate the integration between the company’s current revenue-generating platform and its back-office/ERP environment to ensure financial and operational synchronization
Act as the primary technical authority for the core technology stack, maintaining mastery of TypeScript, SQL, Python (Django), and Node.js environments
Phase out manual processes by engineering seamless data integrations and event-driven architectures that eliminate bottlenecks and maximize underwriting velocity
Engineer 'submit-to-bind' workflows that are specifically optimized for speed and consistency, allowing underwriters to navigate complex risks with ease
Maintain deep hands-on solution delivery involvement while simultaneously providing mentorship and task planning for a growing engineering pod
Explore emerging AI technologies , including agentic AI and intelligent workflow automation, to maintain the company’s industry-first competitive advantage
Work closely with the company’s MSP to ensure production-level support and rapid-response protocols for critical system updates
Work closely with the company’s MSP to build sophisticated monitoring and alerting systems to track platform health and identify performance friction before it impacts the bottom line
Navigate extreme ambiguity and drive execution in a fast-paced environment where speed-to-market is a primary driver of decision-making
Maintain audit-ready documentation to satisfy the rigorous requirements of carrier partners and financial regulators
Champion the 'business relevance' factor , translating technical milestones into clear business outcomes that resonate with C-suite stakeholders
Work remotely from a continental U.S. location, with the willingness and capability to travel by any means as required by the business situation
Qualification
Required
5+ years hands-on software development experience
Solid P&C and/or Specialty underwriting domain knowledge
2+ years hands-on AI-driven software development lead experience
5+ years of hands-on development experience with a focus on TypeScript, SQL, Python (Django), and Node.js
3+ years leading software engineering solution delivery including direct hands-on responsibility for architecture and mentorship
Expertise in distributed systems and scaling APIs to ensure platform reliability during periods of rapid, non-linear growth
Deep knowledge of event-driven architectures, with specific experience in Kafka
Proven track record in DevOps, including the design and management of robust CI/CD pipelines that meet SOC 2 standards
Mastery of RESTful services and the ability to design APIs that are both performant and maintainable
Excellent command of the English language, both written and oral
Superior business communication skills
Experience with workflow engines or rules-based systems, specifically in a financial services or insurance context
A 'Builder' mindset, characterized by a preference for shipping code and solving problems over presenting slides and managing meetings
Strong collaborative ability, working seamlessly with Product and Design teams
Resilience and adaptability, with a history of success in environments characterized by rapid change and high performance
Preferred
Solid P&C and/or Specialty Insurance Underwriting domain knowledge
Demonstrated strength in data analytics and data engineering, specifically regarding data pipelines and AI-enabled software optimization
Prior success in launching digital insurance products ideally on an AI-native platform or risk-operations environment
A track record of successfully passing carrier and financial audits
Deep familiarity with Policy Administration Systems (PAS) and how they integrate with modern front-end underwriting technology
A proven history of achieving SOC 2 compliance from a 'ground zero' state within a software development organization
Experience integrating cloud-based back office platforms with revenue-generating systems for enterprise-wide data consistency
Background as a Systems Architect or Lead Developer at a successful Fintech or Insurtech startup
Advanced knowledge of SQL optimization and data modeling for complex insurance platforms
The ability to link technical engineering milestones directly to the company's bottom-line revenue growth and premium capacity
Experience managing agentic AI implementations that have moved beyond prototype into production
A history of building lean, high-output software engineering teams
BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field from a rigorous academic program
