Environmental Inspector
The Hawk Group is seeking an Environmental Inspector to provide daily environmental compliance oversight for oil and gas construction activities in Alaska. The role involves monitoring construction activities to ensure compliance with environmental permits and contract requirements while collaborating with construction personnel and environmental leadership.
Responsibilities
Conduct daily monitoring of the construction ROW to evaluate contractor implementation of required environmental mitigation measures, as defined in contracts, permits, and authorizing documents
Verify construction activities are occurring within approved workspaces, access roads, and limits of disturbance
Ensure environmentally sensitive areas, including wetlands and waterbodies, are properly identified, marked, and protected
Provide guidance to construction personnel on proper implementation of environmental requirements and best management practices
Empowered to order immediate corrective actions for activities violating environmental conditions
Inform the Lead Environmental Inspector (Lead EI) of the need for site‑specific shutdowns due to non‑compliance, serious violations, or Stop Work Orders
Identify areas of non‑compliance or problem areas and ensure contractor follow‑up actions are completed
Establish corrective action priorities, track progress, and document completion
Monitor and verify compliance with environmental requirements, including but not limited to: Proper installation and maintenance of temporary and permanent soil erosion and sediment control measures
Installation and restoration of drainage and irrigation features to pre‑construction conditions
Appropriate use and maintenance of public and private roads
Proper placement and function of dewatering structures and slope breakers
Trench dewatering activities conducted to ensure sediments are properly deposited and do not impact property, wetlands, or waterbodies
Proper segregation and handling of topsoil
Correct restoration of contours and topsoil, and determination of whether imported soils are required and approved
Proper equipment fueling and fuel storage in approved and compliant locations
Verification that stabilization requirements are met in accordance with permits and site conditions
Prepare daily environmental compliance reports and weekly spread‑level reports
Report any construction activity to the Lead EI and Chief EI that: 1. Is inconsistent with applicable legal or regulatory environmental requirements, and/or 2. Is causing, or is likely to imminently cause, serious environmental degradation
Regularly inform the Lead EI and Environmental Coordinator of the status and priority of environmental issues within assigned areas
Advise environmental leadership on restricting construction activities during adverse weather conditions, including winter construction delays, and recommend appropriate monitoring adjustments
Coordinate regularly with construction supervisors, foremen, and crews
Assist contractors with interpretation and clarification of environmental requirements
Maintain and distribute environmental punch lists identifying items requiring correction or follow‑up
Document and report spills in daily reports, as required, and verify clean‑up (acknowledging the contractor retains primary spill reporting responsibility)
Conduct final walkover inspections of restored ROW and develop: A list of areas requiring additional work, and A list of areas that should be monitored closely following construction for submittal to the Client Company upon project completion
Monitor site restoration following completion of construction activities
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related field preferred
Minimum of 3 years of environmental inspection or construction compliance experience, preferably in oil and gas or linear infrastructure projects
Knowledge of environmental permits, environmental mitigation measures, and construction best management practices
Ability to identify non‑compliance issues and clearly document findings
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently in remote and challenging environments
Preferred
Experience working on Alaska or Arctic/Sub‑Arctic construction projects
Prior Environmental Inspector experience on multi‑spread projects
Familiarity with federal, state, and project‑specific environmental requirements
Environmental inspection or compliance certifications
