Kitchen Equipment Technician II

Fairfax County Public Schools is seeking a Kitchen Equipment Technician II who will lead and perform skilled journey-level mechanical work to maintain, modify, troubleshoot, and repair various gas and electric commercial kitchen equipment. The role involves both on-site and shop repairs, ensuring that kitchen appliances and equipment are functioning properly in school kitchens and related departments.

Responsibilities

Leads and performs skilled journey-level work required to disassemble damaged or worn kitchen equipment in the shop
Carries out repair and rebuild operations such as rewiring, replacing bearings, bushings, brushes, and centrifugal or on-off switches
Performs the maintenance and repair of a variety of electrical appliances, tools, and other equipment as assigned
Repairs equipment on location when necessary
Maintains and repairs a variety of major appliances and related equipment in school kitchens and home economics and athletic departments such as ovens, food mixers, salad cutters, food carriers, compactors, electric ranges, dishwashers, scales, steamers, food fryers, steam kettles, steam tables, candy stoves, warmers, other parts and components as necessary
Diagnoses defects and makes minor or major repairs
Performs work on-site or in a shop
Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicle supplied with tools and materials
Performs operator maintenance on the vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition
Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used
Performs other related duties as required or assigned

Required

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate
Three (3) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of appliances, commercial kitchen equipment, and related equipment, one (1) year of which shall have been at the journey level
Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record
May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status
Knowledge and skills in the use of the methods, equipment, and tools pertinent to the trade
Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions
Knowledge of local, state, or national codes
Knowledge of basic computer skills
Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals
Capability to estimate time and material needs, determine when the repair is not economically practical, and perform routine tasks and arithmetical computations

Preferred

Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program
