Third Assistant Engineer R/V Armstrong
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Third Assistant Engineer. The role is responsible for the proper operation of the main propulsion and ship's service generators, supervising un-licensed watch standers, and performing routine maintenance of machinery and electrical equipment.

Responsibilities
Checks cleaning, lubrication, and routine maintenance of all machinery and electrical equipment
For the R/V Atlantis also included is maintenance of the Launch and Recovery System (LARS) for the Alvin
Cleans engine room bilges, strainers in lubricating system, and all water pumps, tanks, and connected systems
Ensures safety devices are in proper working condition
Assists, while in port, with supervision, maintenance, and repair of engine room equipment and spaces, and in loading freshwater and bunkers
Keeps a log of all watch operations and conditions, including unusual occurrences and emergency signals
Proficiency in the following: Diesel engines, electrical maintenance and troubleshooting, hydraulics, reading of both hydraulic and electrical schematics, HVAC equipment, and air compressors
Stands engine room watch, supervises Oiler, and ensures watches are stood properly and orders carried out
Performs other duties as required
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree from an accredited sea service academy and one year sea duty as an engineering officer; in the absence of a formal degree, equivalent work experience
Computer literacy in the use of word-processing, inventory and database management, and electronic mail programs
High level of training as evidenced by a U.S. Coast Guard license, preferably Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited Horsepower, Motor Vessels
Minimum licensing for R/V Neil Armstrong and the R/V Atlantis requires Third Assistant Engineer unlimited HP, Motor Vessels
All applicable training as required by the Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW 95)
Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credentials
Good communication and personnel management skills
In-depth understanding of the proper operation and maintenance of ship's engines and related equipment
Demonstrate good safety practices and procedures
Unexpired (STCW Expiration date) USCG med Certificate
Ability to pass a DOT Pre-employment drug screen
Ability to work at least 8 hours per day and, at times in excess of 12 hours per day, 7 days per week
Ability to work at sea for three to five months continuously
Ability to live and work in cramped quarters, frequently in bad weather and with violent ship motion
Ability to pass examinations for visual acuity, color sense, and hearing as established in Title 46 CFR Parts 10 and 12
Ability to pass a physical evaluation as described in the enclosed Navigation and Vessel Inspection Articles 6-89
Ability to climb steep and vertical ladders, and enter and exit compartments through hatches, doors, and sills up to two feet high
Ability to participate in emergency drills and in launching lifeboats and life rafts
Ability to perform physical labor, climb and handle moderate weights and equipment over 50 pounds
Ability to balance work in confined and unstable areas
Ability to bend, kneel, squat
Ability to clean, maintain, and inspect equipment
Ability to reach work areas, equipment and stores by ladder and stairs
Ability to crawl through bilge pockets, and under ladders and winch beds
Ability to manipulate nuts, bolts, tools, and cleaning gear
Ability to handle equipment and stores with sure grip
Ability to communicate with people
Ability to load stores over 50 pounds
Ability to move equipment over 50 pounds
Ability to reach up, over, and under equipment and stores
Ability to read labels, menus, logs, charts, and gauges in poor lighting
Ability to operate crane, Avon, lifeboat, and life raft
Ability to work on equipment
Ability to perform rounds at sea
Ability to maintain logs
Preferred
Third Assistant Engineer experience on similar research vessel
