Assistant Director, Accessible Media and Technology

The University of Virginia is seeking an Assistant Director for Accessible Media and Technology at the Student Disability Access Center. This role involves supervising the creation of accessible course materials, managing assistive technology solutions, and serving as a resource for accessibility-related matters across the university.

Responsibilities

Supervise alternative format text creation, remediation, and fulfillment. Hire, supervise, and direct wage and student employees working on the creation of accessible course materials
Manage assistive technology solutions and coordinate accessible course materials. Manage equipment/software installations, including records of assigned licenses, subscriptions, and hardware inventory
Serve as a resource for administering and using software and hardware, database management, assessment and planning reporting templates, and annual documentation processes, including development of internal training and coordinating troubleshooting efforts. Provide training as needed for students using accessible technology
Remain current with of emerging technologies, accessibility guidelines, relevant trends in higher education and pedagogy, and best practices and tools for accessible learning environments by participating in conferences, workshops, and other resources for continuing professional development
Maintain a small caseload of students with higher accessible technology needs (e.g., sensory disabilities, temporary injuries). Duties would include reviewing documentation and determining appropriate accommodations on an individual basis, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Collaborate as part of the overall SDAC accommodation services team on case management and program development
Facilitate implementation of accommodations and other services for students with disabilities. Collaborate with University faculty and staff, as appropriate, in support of students with disabilities. Engage in ongoing problem-solving resolution
Serves as a primary responsible party within SDAC for website development and management
Consult and work in partnership with the University ITS and Student Health IT services on network compatibility, security issues, software distribution, licensing opportunities, and other aspects of University IT-related responsibilities
Foster strategic partnerships with campus partners while also broadening understanding of current perspectives from students and employees with disabilities to help create more inclusive learning experiences and environments
Assist the SDAC Leadership teams in monitoring and reporting aspects of data tracking and budgeting related to accommodation service provision and accessible technology
Adhere to standards of confidentiality and FERPA when working with students, parents, faculty, and staff
Other duties as assigned

Required

Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as Amended, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Working experience (2-3 years is strongly desired) determining academic accommodations, providing student support services and/or interpreting evaluations for Individuals with disabilities
Experience working with a wide variety of accessibility technologies
Demonstrated universal cultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advancing support for the entire community served
Demonstrated integrity and ability to handle complex, sensitive, and confidential issues
Ability to build trusting relationships with all constituencies within the university community
Experience in developing and facilitating professional training for students, faculty, and staff
Strong organizational and program development skills
Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: Three years of instructional computing experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
