Operations Forester
The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is dedicated to protecting the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Appalachian region. They are seeking an Operations Forester to oversee daily operations in Piscataquis County, focusing on road projects, timber harvests, and collaboration with various teams to manage the Maine Woods Initiative.
Responsibilities
Coordinate road projects and maintenance on AMC’s 400+ mile road network while adhering to Maine’s best management practices (BMP) and AMC’s land management objectives
Work closely with contractors on timber harvests to oversee that silvicultural objectives are being met and BMPs are being adhered to
Assist AMC’s resource management team (Huber Resources Corporation) and Land Department team with multi-year timber harvest planning and operational project planning (road construction and maintenance and bridge crossings)
Work with local contractors and external partners to implement a variety of infrastructure related projects including road maintenance, road construction, crossing construction, and timber harvesting
Assist with layout for both commercial and pre-commercial forestry projects
Developing, managing, and overseeing road and bridge/structure inventory
File and data management for all MWI infrastructure projects
Road construction contract administration and inspections with contractors
Road winterization oversight on MWI property
Road layout and design on MWI property
Property line layout and marking of AMC owned properties
Work with AMC volunteers on AMC land and trail projects as required
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Forestry or other natural-resource related field with a focus on forest management
Licensed forester in the State of Maine or the ability to become a licensed forester
3-5 years of experience working in the forest sector in an operational capacity
Professional experience with overseeing forest road maintenance, construction, and project design
Familiarity and professional experience with GIS software to create maps and utilize the software for planning and management
Experience managing harvest crews to meet the silvicultural objectives of the landowner
Knowledge of silvicultural harvest operations and harvest systems
Ability to work independently to achieve department goals and objectives as part of a high functioning team
Must be comfortable and able to work alone in a backcountry setting traveling by truck, snowmobile, ATV, snowshoe, and hiking
Ability to relocate to Piscataquis County, ME or within a commutable distance to AMC's property
