ASSOCIATE SAFETY ENGINEER (ELEVATORS)
Caltrans District 3 is part of the Department of Industrial Relations, focusing on improving safety and health in the workplace. The Associate Safety Engineer (Elevators) will perform complex and routine safety inspections of elevators, ensuring compliance with safety orders and regulations.

Responsibilities
Independently performs complex and routine safety inspections of conveyances
Performs all work in accordance with the Elevator Unit policies and procedures
Apply and uphold the provisions of the State's Elevator safety orders, and other applicable laws
Qualification
Required
Applicants must be either reachable on an employment list, have transfer eligibility or have reinstatement eligibility
Ability to communicate with the public about compliance issues as they relate to a conveyance
Crawling or climbing may be necessary to access various equipment
Prolonged periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending or kneeling
Proper use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (hard hat, safety eyewear, safety boots, hearing protection, coveralls, etc.)
Move and transport up to 50 lbs. of equipment or work-related materials
Reaching (above and below shoulder level)
Have functional vision
Preferred
Knowledge of Elevator Safety Orders and other applicable codes as it applies to conveyances under the jurisdiction of the Elevator Unit
Proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to ensure that written materials are free of any errors
Elevator Unit/DIR Policy and Procedures in regard to the performance of their duties
The application and usage of various tools to perform conveyance inspections
The usage of Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
Skills to resolve conflicts between personnel and/or the public timely, fairly, and tactfully
Ability to obtain and apply information collected during an inspection to identify potential compliance issues with the Elevator Safety Orders
Independently perform inspections on conveyances under a variety of adverse conditions and configurations
Identify when assistance is needed to perform an inspection
Operate a motor vehicle in a safe and legal manner
Proficient at email and electronic means of communication
Excellent organizational skills to ensure efficient planning and execution of work
Excellent verbal communication skills with regard to Elevator Unit business, directing the public in resolving compliance issues and navigating DIR website
Possession of a valid California Driver's License and Car insurance
