Law Clerk Opportunities Summer 2026
The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) provides effective, free civil legal services and education to individuals with low income or barriers to accessing the legal system. The Law Clerk role involves assisting attorneys in various legal programs, conducting research, drafting documents, and interacting with clients to support their legal needs.

Responsibilities
Gain experience interacting with clients; researching and writing both court documents and client correspondence; attending court appearances, administrative hearings, or other meetings; and exposure to a law firm environment
Perform research and writing for federal court cases, administrative appeals, and administrative hearings
Call clients, observe meetings and hearings, and assist attorneys in preparation for hearings
Assist with obtaining Orders of Protection, Child and Spousal Support, Custody and Visitation, and Divorce
Provide legal advice to clients, conduct legal consultations, and assess client needs
Conduct client interviewing; legal research and writing; document review and analysis; investigation; drafting legal documents and correspondence
Perform research and writing for fair hearings and administrative appeals as well as possibly assist the attorney with Article 78 appeals
Call medical/social services providers; document review and analysis; drafting legal documents and correspondence; and assisting staff attorneys in hearing/trial preparation
Draft pleadings and correspondence, conduct client interviews, contact clients, case development and investigation, research and legal assessment, interact with courts, opposing attorneys and agencies, assist with trial and hearing preparation, and accompany attorneys to court and administrative hearings
Conduct client intake, perform legal research, draft documents and correspondence, maintain case files and grant records, coordinate with VA staff and community partners, and participate in outreach at VA facilities and community events
Qualification
Required
Commitment to providing legal services to the poor
Excellent research and writing skills
Ability to work well under stress and time pressure
Prior relevant experience in legal services to the poor, especially law school clinical experience
Ability to speak Spanish is a plus
Willingness to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week
