Park Supervisor 2 (NY HELPS) - Finger Lakes Tree Crew

New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is responsible for overseeing the state's parks and recreational facilities. The Park Supervisor 2 will manage the regional tree crew, ensuring the proper evaluation, maintenance, and removal of trees while supervising staff and collaborating on replanting efforts.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Directly supervise, provide technical direction, train, and evaluate staff in conjunction with the Park Manager 1 to ensure that assigned tasks are completed correctly and safely in a timely fashion
Evaluate tree health and risk based on visual inspection as well as document locations and conditions of trees scheduled for removal or treatment
Collaborate with regional staff to support replanting efforts and tree inventory management
Build and set up rigging systems, including connecting pulleys, sheaves, and related hardware for controlled tree removals or material handling
Adhere to all applicable safety regulations and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
Develop, communicate, and implement a plan for felling and other removal methods for hazardous or dead trees using appropriate tools and equipment
Confers with park managers to identify potentially hazardous trees that will be removed or branches to be pruned. Assist the Park Manager 1 and park managers in hazardous tree assessments throughout the region
Safely fell, limb, buck, and remove hazardous trees, whether standing, lodged, or downed, using appropriate tools and equipment
Perform proper tree care operations including pruning and removals from aerial lifts and the ground
Brush chipping and integrative pest and vegetation management
Operate and maintain various equipment including chainsaws, bucket trucks, aerial lifts, dump trucks, chippers, stump grinders, skid steers, and other heavy equipment and hand tools used in tree care and park operations

Required

Four years of experience in the construction, operation, or maintenance of a park, recreational facility, or campus; one year of this experience must be at a supervisory level
An associate's or higher level degree or 60 college semester credit hours AND two years as described in No. 1 above; one year of this experience must be at a supervisory level
Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment
Must possess or obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within the probationary period and maintain it as a condition of employment
Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment
Must possess or obtain First Aid/CPR certification within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment
Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor and must be able to lift at least 75 pounds
Must have the ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment including trucks, chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders and skid steers
Must be willing to work outdoors year-round and in all weather conditions
Will also be required to be deployed to perform work during emergency events as directed by the State Emergency Management Operations Center and/or OPRHP management

Preferred

One year of experience in tree care or forestry operations
