Piro Program Assistant Director and School Counselor

Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in San Francisco, California. The Piro Program Assistant Director works with the Director of the Piro Program to prepare first-generation, low-income students for college matriculation, serving as the School Counselor for Piro Scholars and supporting their academic, social, and personal needs.

Responsibilities

Model Lasallian/Vincentian charisms
Support SHC’s mission, philosophy and Integral Student Outcomes
Provide direct academic and personal support for students, primarily served by the Piro Program
Meet regularly with the Director of the Piro Program to plan and implement a comprehensive program, annual calendar, and program policies for the program
Collaborate with internal and external support services to facilitate academic, social, and personal success for students, primarily those in the Piro Program
Design and implement academic and personal skills classes and workshops for all Piro students, including summer school
Assist with quarterly Piro Program meetings and other meetings as necessary
Collaborate with the Director to plan, implement, and evaluate programs
Qualitatively and quantitatively document achievements of Piro Scholars, including participation in external summer programs; build relationships with and evaluate summer and afterschool programs; serve as a formal liaison to external programs supporting Piro students
Assist with Piro Program outreach, including programs with De Marillac Academy, Irish for a Day, Open House, personal/group tours, etc
Act as a liaison with Piro Scholar families, providing informal access as well as facilitating services such as translation and conducting home visits when necessary
Support families with financial aid application and tuition management registration form through TADS; follow up with families who have or who develop increased financial needs
Collaborate with the Summer School Principal and Director to assist with good order, student behavior, academics, and logistics during the summer months
Collaborate with Summer School Principal and Director to provide evaluative feedback on all Piro, and (when appropriate) conditionally-enrolled students, to admissions and administration for possible next steps regarding enrollment or re-enrollment in SHC
Assist families with access to school systems such as Google Workspaces; Powerschool and Schoology
Undertake other duties as assigned
Serve as school counselor for Piro Scholars, ensuring that Piro scholars meet SHC graduation requirements, including understanding prerequisites for honors and AP courses, wellness, and co-curricular participation
Collaborate with SHC faculty and counselors (including Academic Resource Program, Piro Scholar tutors, Wellness Counselor, student activities and summer school faculty) and external support services to facilitate academic, social, and personal well-being for students in the Piro Program
Attend weekly School Counseling meetings, monthly department meetings and all other meetings as assigned to achieve the Counseling and Advising department goals
Respond to communication from students, teachers, parents, or administrators within 24 hours (not including holidays and weekends)
Regularly monitor students’ academic achievement and follow up with students, teachers, and parents to address deficiencies in a timely manner; serves as a point person for students and families managing extended absences
Consistently document all contacts with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other personnel in the school’s student information system (PowerSchool) within 24 hours of the contact
Assist in the administration of final exams and periodic standardized testing
Collaborate on periodic presentations to colleagues and families on academic and social-emotional skills and challenges
Facilitate group meetings; maintain counseling group pages on the learning management system, providing students and families with timely and useful information
Engage in professional learning as an essential part of being a reflective practitioner and as part of the school’s ongoing commitment to excellence
Actively participate in SHC’s strategic initiatives to strengthen meaningful diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices, especially strategies to support equitable learning, culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, and universal design for learning
Participate in schoolwide liturgies, assemblies, admissions events, and professional development opportunities as a member of the SHC community
Engage in the mission of SHC and the charisms of the Daughters of Charity and De La Salle Christian Brothers and Department of Catholic Schools through formation programs
Required to attend up to four (4) school functions outside of the regular school day, not to exceed four (4) hours each. Attendance is required at Back-to-School Night, Open House, and the Baccalaureate Mass; the fourth event options will be designated and announced at the start of each school year
Participate in up to seven (7) supervisory assignments outside the school day per year, options include overnight activities; assignments may be adjusted based on type of activity and student course load and are not required during school vacations or holidays
Serve as a substitute for an absent teacher up to six (6) class periods per school year, prorated based on FTE. Substitution beyond six (6) class periods will be compensated at the current per-class substitution rate

Required

Masters in School Counseling, School Counseling (or equivalent)
Pupil Personnel Services Credential (or equivalent)
Experience working with high school students in an educational setting
Demonstrated relational, organizational, collaboration/communication skills
Current CPR and First Aid Certification required and must remain updated

Preferred

Experience as a school counselor
Fluent in Spanish, Tagalog, or Vietnamese
Experience in a Catholic school
