Responsibilities

Increase awareness, knowledge and actions implemented by individuals and communities to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires, such as defensible space and other fuels reduction activities, fire prevention and fire safe building standards; conduct detailed inspections of structures and land, obtain information and provide recommendation on defensible space for property owners; apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations, apply county and department policies and procedures, detect fire hazards, demonstrate effective customer service skills, read, understand and utilize maps, enter and retrieve data from a computer, prepare complete and concise documents and reports, understand and follow oral and written instructions, understand, interpret and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures and standards relevant to work performed, establish and maintain a variety of filing, recordkeeping, control and tracking systems, effectively represent the department and the County in meetings, effectively use a computer system, software applications and modern business equipment; assist fire prevention staff with public education, community outreach and fire prevention activities; researches and prepares fire and life safety notices and correction letters that outline compliance issues and deficiencies; increase public awareness, knowledge and actions implemented by citizens and the community to reduce the loss of human life, property and the environment due to destructive wildfires and performs other duties as assigned

Required

Completion of 12 semester units or 18 quarter units from an accredited college or university; OR three (3) months of experience with public or private entities performing sub-professional work in forestry/fire suppression or natural resource management or other related work
Possession of a valid California driver's license
Ability to apply safe work practices; follow written and oral instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; cooperate with others; utilize good judgment and take appropriate action in emergency situations; safely operate departmental vehicles and other mobile equipment; communicate effectively; utilize maps; properly utilize job-related equipment, supplies, and tools; adjust to changing work assignments, major process changes, and emergencies; apply basic principles of forestry and fire protection; identify tree and shrub species; analyze job-related data; utilize a computer and job related computer software programs; apply basic principles of fire suppression and control; apply laws, rules, and regulations applicable to scope of duties; perform inspections and related assignments in the field; understand and work cooperatively with the community, organization and operations of the County Fire; apply applicable Federal, State, and/or Local laws, rules, and regulations; perform mathematical calculations; maintain records; handle multiple tasks simultaneously; detect fire hazards; interpret and explain fire prevention services; build and maintain positive working relationships with stakeholders to ensure that assigned fire prevention coordination efforts are successful; read routine blueprints; and independently conduct fire (defensible space) inspections

Preferred

Experience working as a career or volunteer firefighter engaged in fire suppression or as a fire inspector performing inspections is desirable
Experience working with the public and stakeholders presenting information and gaining cooperation
Experience with basic computer applications and data entry
Interest and willingness to continue learning
