Research Scientist, Human Brain Tissue Specialist

Responsibilities
Lead precise dissection of postmortem human brain tissue in coordination with neurosurgeons
Ensure rigorous documentation, labeling, and inventory control for all biospecimens
Follow and enhance SOPs to maintain sample integrity from acquisition through analysis
Support targeted tissue sampling aligned with project-specific neuropathological goals
Prepare tissue and biofluid samples for downstream histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular workflows
Partner with clinical and research teams to identify and process regions of interest across major neurodegenerative disease phenotypes
Maintain detailed dissection notes, donor metadata, and clinical history in structured digital systems
Ensure full compliance with ethical guidelines and institutional protocols for human tissue research
Continuously improve protocols for tissue preservation, staining, and analysis
Mentor junior lab members and provide hands-on training in dissection techniques
Collaborate across pathology, molecular biology, and informatics teams to drive integrated project execution
Contribute to team meetings with clear updates on sample availability, processing timelines, and emerging challenges
Qualification
Required

Preferred
Advanced degree (PhD, MD, or Master's) in Neuropathology, Neurology, Anatomy, or related field
3–5+ years of direct experience in human brain tissue dissection, preferably in a clinical or research pathology environment
Deep working knowledge of cortical and subcortical brain anatomy
Proven track record of handling postmortem human brain tissue under time-sensitive conditions
Flexibility to support evening/weekend work for acute tissue processing
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex biological concepts to non-specialists
Experience partnering with brain banks or academic neuropathology programs
Familiarity with neurodegenerative disease staging (e.g., Braak, CERAD) and hallmark lesion identification
Proficiency in frozen sectioning, microdissection, or digital pathology workflows
Exposure to image analysis tools for neuropathological quantification
Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a track record of solving novel, cross-disciplinary problems
Ability to thrive in fast-paced, evolving research environments with minimal supervision
Experience contributing to a high-impact, mission-driven research culture; startup or fast-growth lab experience a plus
Comfortable navigating ambiguity and building systems or processes from scratch when needed
