Responsibilities

The Life Coach offers one-on-one, face-to-face guidance and support to their clients each month
Life coaches have experience in foster care or have responded to trauma in a similar situation, and, as such, are uniquely qualified
Day to day support includes guiding each client towards improved problem solving, network building, health and wellness, career stability, financial literacy, educational attainment, secure housing and transport, personal and spiritual discovery, and, ultimately, towards living with purpose and conviction
The Life Coach provides a safe space for client-led coaching, establishing trust, remaining confidential, staying curious, focused, open, honest, empathetic, and considerate with clients through a thought provoking process that inspires clients to maximize their personal and professional potential
Service navigation includes coordinating and linking individuals to essential health and community services as well as identifying barriers and solutions to service receipt
It includes not only identifying resources, but also assisting with the referral or application process, following up with received services, and ensuring the connection is solidified
The Life Coach functions as a navigator to the young adult
Work with the SC DSS Case Managers, and other specialized SCvDSS staff, such as Transition Specialists and Housing Authority Staff to submit applications for Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) program and Family Unification Voucher (FUP) program, as needed
Work with the SCDSS Education and Training Voucher (ETV) program coordinator to deploy education success strategies and supports needed to pursue post-secondary education are acquired and completed
Provide assistance with identifying needed Chafee-funded services and helping the young adult provide all required documentation to SCDSS case manager to submit Chafee funding requests
Work with employment readiness agencies such as Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), SC-Works, and JobLink to ensure young adults have access to career pathways assessments and support
Provide assistance with securing and/or replacing missing essential documents (e.g., Medicaid renewal, social security cards, birth certificates, photo IDs, etc.) and help the young person create a system/plan to keep these documents safe and secure
Provide connections and referrals to any needed adult-serving systems (Department of Mental Health, South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, Vocational Rehabilitation, Substance Addiction Recovery Support, etc.) and benefit programs, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, and other applicable supportive services based on need and eligibility
The employee is responsible for further developing Aspire in order to meet three goals: Clients achieve their life dreams by improving their well-being and becoming self-sufficient through individual guidance, peer-to-peer connection, and community engagement
Clients improve their GPA, retention, and graduation rates, access to stable housing and transportation, and long term support in comparison to pre-program metrics and their peers
Clients lower their risk of homelessness, untreated mental health issues, substance abuse, incarceration, physical illness, career turnover rates, and human trafficking in comparison to pre-program metrics and their peers

Preferred

Preference of experience in foster care or related experience as a youth ('lived experience')
Preference of post-secondary degree
Preference for 3+ years of stable work experience. If an applicant has been out of the workforce, similar commitments in the community
Preference for clinical knowledge and practical skills related to trauma management
Ability to drive clients as needed on a monthly basis. Use of own car. Reimbursement at $0.50/mile and up to $2,000 per annum for maintenance related automobile expenses
Flexibility to schedule with clients in the evenings and on weekends as needed
Ability to participate in On call rotation for weekend/evening hours, with added pay provided
Use of own computer, phone, and printer. Organization reimburses for most office expenses
A positive attitude – you will be working with stressed systems. If you show frustration with the obstacles that will arise, the work can very quickly turn into a game of blame and pointing fingers. We honor everyone in the work and focus on partnership and mutual respect
Strong ability to guide others in life skills, navigate the child welfare system, and focus on building well-being for clients. In addition, ability to lead, listen, motivate, and remain empathetic. Key is to be detail-oriented, organized, and proactive
