The State of Hawaiʻi is seeking a Legal Clerk to support the Department of the Attorney General in the Child Support Enforcement Agency Division. The role involves performing a variety of legal clerical work, including preparing, processing, and filing legal documents, while working under supervision and guidance.

Responsibilities

Performs routine clerical work involving preparing, typing, maintaining and processing legal forms, documents and materials; assists with more difficult tasks under closer supervision for the purpose of training; performs other duties as required
Performs a wide variety of legal clerical work in support of attorneys which primarily involve the preparation, processing and filing of moderately difficult legal clerical work, and for carrying out more difficult tasks under supervision and guidance on a progressively responsible basis
Independently perform a wide variety of legal clerical work in support of attorneys which primarily involve the preparation, processing and filing of a variety of complex legal and court documents with courts or quasi-judicial bodies; prepare a successive variety of documents for each case which require a variety of specialized procedures for preparation, processing and filing; prioritize assignments in order to complete preparation and processing of legal and court documents for various cases within frequent time constraints and established deadlines; and perform other related duties as assigned

Required

Legal Authorization To Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States
Legal Clerk I Experience: Applicants must have had a combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to one (1) year of progressively responsible clerical work experience which involved: preparing, typing, processing and filing legal documents, or receiving and examining complex business documents to determine compliance with statutory or contractual requirements
Legal Clerk I Knowledge of: Office practices and procedures; grammar, spelling, punctuation, word usage and sentence construction; clerical requirements for preparing and typing a variety of complex documents and forms, and other related materials
Legal Clerk I Ability to: Accurately prepare, type, process and file a variety of complex documents, in proper format, in accordance with established procedures and within prescribed deadlines; research information and records; present research information orally and in writing citing proper resources; establish and maintain files and systems of records; carry out legal office clerical routines; operate computer equipment to prepare legal documents, reports, correspondence, etc., and input, verify, update and extract data from information systems; work within constant time constraints and deadlines; explain legal processes, procedures and/or departmental policies; type accurately at the rate of 40 net words per minute; and deal effectively with others including attorneys, court personnel and the public
Legal Clerk II Experience: Applicants must have had a combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to one (1) and one-half (1/2) years of progressively responsible legal clerical work experience which involved preparing, typing, processing and filing legal documents and which demonstrated the prerequisite knowledge and abilities described below
Legal Clerk Specialized Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible legal clerical work experience which involved preparing, typing, processing and filing legal documents and which demonstrated the prerequisite knowledge and abilities described below
Legal Clerk Knowledge of: Legal terminology; court functions; format, content and the use of legal documents; various types of court actions and associated processes and procedures; legal and office practices and procedures; grammar, spelling, punctuation, word usage and sentence construction; legal documents preparation, processing and filing practices and procedures; and procedures for processing and filing legal and court documents with courts, boards and commissions
Legal Clerk Ability to: Prepare, process and file a variety of legal and court documents, in proper format, in accordance with established procedures; carry out legal office clerical routines; communicate effectively with others and maintain harmonious working relationships; and type accurately (using a computer, word processing and/ or other software applications) at the rate of 40 net words per minute
Skilled Typing: Applicants must be able to type accurately, using a computer, word processing and/or other software applications, at the rate of 40 net words per minute
