Traffic Technician

Responsibilities

Collect and analyze real-world traffic data that directly supports traffic engineering studies, planning efforts, and responses to citizen concerns
Installing and maintaining traffic counters, road tubes, cameras, and radar equipment
Collecting detailed traffic information such as speed, volume, delay, and turning movements at intersections
Prepare, compute, and input data, turning field observations into accurate reports, memorandums, and studies used for traffic analysis, ordinances, and regulations
Supporting special studies—such as speed zone evaluations or intersection analyses for potential signal placement
Reviewing crash data to help identify trends and solutions
Investigate citizen requests, provide clear information, and make recommendations in accordance with state and federal guidelines

Required

High school diploma or equivalent
One (1) year of experience in collecting traffic, civil engineering, or related data
Must maintain a valid driver's license
Within six (6) months of position assignment: Must obtain and maintain Florida Department of Transportation Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification
Working knowledge of civil and traffic engineering principles
Comfortable using traffic data collection tools such as radar units, counters, and time-mark equipment
Proficient with computers, tablets, and job-related software, including GIS and asset management systems like ArcGIS, Cityworks, and Sign View
Able to read and interpret technical plans and specifications
Able to collect and analyze data and draw sound conclusions
Organized and dependable, able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
Able to follow both written and verbal instructions
Comfortable working safely around moving traffic and in varying weather conditions
Hands-on mindset with the physical ability to perform fieldwork and manual tasks
Ability to operate a motor vehicle and responsibly handle specialized and sensitive equipment
Clear communication and customer service skills
Able to prepare reports and documentation
Able to respond to correspondence across multiple platforms
Able to build positive working relationships with coworkers, partners, and the public
