Responsibilities

Supervises the work of assigned staff; delegates and reviews work assignments; conducts performance evaluations
Reviews and evaluates all chemical, physical, and microbiological analysis results and reports; reports required laboratory results to regulatory agencies
Maintains computerized logging system to facilitate ready access to information on sample status, to sort samples requiring particular tests, and to facilitate data manipulation in quality assurance procedures and data management
Performs quality control audits and training; ensures various Standard Operating Procedures are current with changes in regulations; prepares documentation
Assists with the preparation of the laboratory budget; forecasts funds needed for staffing, equipment, and materials; monitors and approves purchases and expenditures
Responds to inquiries from the general public, customers, large users, and government agencies on drinking water quality and environmental quality issues. Enters updates in customer issue tracking system
Assists in preparing Consumer Confidence Report and provide compliance information to other community water systems
Coordinates with the Water and Wastewater Treatment Manager pertaining to interfacing with regulatory agencies
Ensures employee compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures
Knowledge of Federal, State and County Regulations or requirements as it pertains to laboratory operations
May work around high voltage, rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals
Coordinates testing with contract laboratory and validates the results provided
Supports the efforts with the lab’s ISO 17025 and NELAP (National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program)
Supports needs of distribution, collection, and stormwater sampling needs including during emergencies
Performs related work as required

Required

Bachelor's or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field
Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in chemical analysis work in an environmental quality control laboratory, preferably for a water treatment plant
Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience required
If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form, and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form to the online application
Ability to work around high voltage, rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals
