Juvenile Teacher, English/Language Arts - Long Creek Youth Development Center, South Portland.

The State of Maine's Department of Corrections is seeking a Juvenile Teacher for English/Language Arts at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. The primary purpose of this full-time position is to teach Language Arts to youth residing at the facility, while promoting their educational and career pathways upon release.

Responsibilities

Develop curricula and educational plans
Instruct classes
Test students
Evaluate student progress to help prepare them for educational or career pathways upon release
Evaluate student academic and social growth
Keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports
Maintain student discipline through adherence to accepted policies and regulations
Assist students in the development of desirable work habits, attitudes, and skills
Prepare lesson plans in accordance with curriculum
Meet with and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students
Create a classroom/career area environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students
Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals

Required

A bachelor's degree in education or related field
Maine ELA Teaching Certification (100) as issued by the Department of Education

Preferred

Knowledge of Department functions, objectives, policies, and programs
Knowledge of curriculum development, classroom instruction, and educational planning
Knowledge of modern Juvenile security principles and practices
Ability to teach Language Arts at the middle school or secondary school level along with general education courses
Ability to assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary
Ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team
Ability to work with and manage at-risk youth
Ability to provide necessary accommodation and modifications for growth and success of all students
