Director of Finance

Responsibilities
Lead development and implementation of the college’s annual budget; ensure alignment with college strategic initiatives and university requirements
Partner with the university Budget and Planning Office to strengthen budgeting and financial reporting systems
Collaborate with department and program leaders and administrators to develop and oversee departmental operating budgets and quarterly/ongoing forecasts; research variances and drive timely resolution of financial issues; continuously improve budgeting, forecasting, and reporting processes for accuracy, efficiency, and transparency
Monitor financial performance of the college and departments to ensure budgets are achievable and aligned with college priorities and communicate risks, issues, and recommendations to the Associate Dean in a timely manner
Develop and maintain a comprehensive three-year financial plan that integrates current, historical, and forecast data and college strategic initiatives
Partner with the associate dean to design and maintain a long-range capital plan, including project scope, cost estimates, and funding sources
Manage the university financial close process for the college and serve as liaison between departments and central university finance
Manage college financial reporting, including required university submissions and internal management reports; lead development of advanced financial management reports and dashboards (e.g., operating results, ROI analyses where appropriate, research performance, endowment activity, sponsored projects)
Analyze financial results against historical performance, budget, forecasts, and key performance indicators; advise the associate dean on trends and variances
Oversee general ledger activity to ensure timely, accurate, and policy-compliant transactions
Review and enhance close-related policies, procedures, and reporting tools
Identify opportunities for cost reduction and revenue enhancement across college operations
Assess and strengthen internal control systems across the college
Supervise the Dean's Office finance staff (Financial Coordinator and Associate Director of Finance), providing coaching, performance feedback, and professional development
Oversee financial operations of academic departments and centers in partnership with department chairs and administrators
Serve as a financial resource to all departments and programs on budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and financial operations (including research, grants and gifts projects as necessary)
Ensure timely posting of dean's office transactions and completion of purchasing and human resources approvals in advance of university deadlines
Provide ongoing guidance on the annual budget, forecasts, and three-year planning process
Develop and deliver training on financial policies, processes, reporting tools, and departmental financial procedures
Verify funding and as delegated by the Dean, approve HR requests, high-value purchase requisitions, PCard applications, travel and expense reimbursements; ensure compliance with university policies
Review and recommend renewal of academic positions and replacement of staff positions; verify future financial commitments within forecast models
Review and approve system access requests (PeopleSoft); ensure appropriate training and compliance with university policies
Represent the college on university initiatives, including purchasing policy and procedure assessments, record retention policy reviews, accounting initiatives, and system reviews and upgrades
Continuously assess financial processes and procedures to improve efficiency, eliminate redundancies, and strengthen controls
Qualification
Required
10 or more years of progressive experience in a related finance field required
Supervisory and/or project management experience required
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration required
Advanced financial management, analysis, budgeting, and reporting skills
Effective verbal and written communication; ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and stakeholders in person and virtually
Ability to work independently and as part of a team; self-starter with sound judgment and solid decision-making skills
Excellent organizational skills; high degree of professionalism and discretion
Attention to detail
Supervisory and project management skills
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, including advanced Excel skills
Ability to use web resources and enterprise email systems effectively
Strong customer service orientation
Ability to meet consistent attendance
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest
Willingness to learn and work with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and technologies
Preferred
Experience in an academic and/or medical center environment preferred
Experience with fund accounting and/or grant management preferred
Master's degree preferred
Expertise with ERP financial systems; experience with data warehousing and query tools preferred
Familiarity with university policies and procedures
