Automation Engineer -- Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
United Pharma is seeking a hands-on Automation Engineer to support automation systems and equipment within a GMP-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. The role focuses on PLC and SCADA systems, change control, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining compliance with regulatory and internal quality standards.
Responsibilities
Prepare, review, and maintain automation and equipment change control documentation in compliance with GMP and internal procedures
Document all changes to PLC, HMI, SCADA, and equipment software accurately and thoroughly
Develop, execute, and document automation and equipment testing protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ support as applicable)
Ensure automation systems meet functional, regulatory, and compliance requirements
Troubleshoot and resolve automation, equipment, and system issues to support continuous manufacturing operations
Maintain and update automation system documentation, including configuration, maintenance, and operational records
Read, write, and modify PLC ladder logic to support equipment functionality and improvements
Configure, install, and support PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems, including:
Allen-Bradley / Rockwell (RSLogix, FactoryTalk ME/SE, RSLinx)
Ignition SCADA
Siemens PLCs (TIA Portal, WinCC – preferred)
Develop and maintain Python scripts or similar tools to support automation tasks, data handling, and system integration
Configure and manage OPC servers (e.g., Kepware) for reliable system communication
Support industrial networking, including TCP/IP addressing, ports, and connectivity troubleshooting
Assist with Windows Server setup, configuration, and maintenance related to automation systems
Qualification
Required
Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley PLCs)
Ignition SCADA
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline
3+ years of automation engineering experience in pharmaceutical or biotech manufacturing environments
Strong hands-on experience with PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems
Working knowledge of GMP, GAMP 5, and SDLC principles
Proficiency in Python and industrial communication protocols such as OPC
Solid understanding of industrial networking fundamentals and Windows-based systems
Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams in a regulated manufacturing environment
