Lead Husbandry Technician & Training Coordinator

Responsibilities

Provides skilled care and husbandry for research animals, including observation, feeding, watering, handling, euthanasia, and facility monitoring in compliance with State, Federal, and University regulations
Works alongside the husbandry team and offers secondary coordination to ensure daily coverage and support departmental objectives
Supports overall facility oversight by maintaining standards, ensuring SOP adherence, and monitoring environmental software to report deviations in temperature, lighting, and humidity. This includes occasional emergency response to after-hours alerts
Delivers and documents training for entry‑level husbandry staff and research personnel, including proficiency checks and compliance retraining
Collaborates with DLAM staff on departmental training efforts
Assists with preparing, maintaining, archiving, and tracking DLAM SOPs, policies, guidelines, signage, and forms
Supports compliance and communicates effectively with coworkers, researchers, and their staff
Serves on the Enrichment Team, helping develop enrichment programs and leading training on new initiatives
Performs other duties as assigned to support departmental goals

Required

Bachelor's degree and three years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience
Laboratory Animal Technologist certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science is required within one year of employment
Must be up to date on Tetanus vaccine
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision
Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software
Ability to anticipate and diffuse problems before they occur
Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions
Ability to problem-solve a variety of situations
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility

Preferred

Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience
