Responsibilities

Perform all Technician II duties at an expert level, including major overhauls of engines and drive train components
Diagnose and repair the most complex mechanical, electrical, and computerized systems
Fabricate, modify, and repair body and chassis components
Conduct advanced diagnostics and repairs to after-treatment and emission systems
Provide technical direction, mentorship, and functional guidance to peers
Assist with purchasing parts and materials; ensure accurate records in automated systems
Lead shop safety practices, staff training, and specialized repairs
Respond to service calls and snow emergencies as required

Required

Basic knowledge of automotive, light, and heavy equipment operations and repair
Ability to use tools, diagnostic equipment, and repair procedures for gas and diesel vehicles
Understanding of preventive maintenance practices and safety procedures
Familiarity with hydraulic, air, and electrical systems, with the ability to learn advanced diagnosis and repair
Ability to perform welding and fabrication
Competence in reading manuals, blueprints, and schematics; following oral and written instructions
Ability to maintain records in automated fleet systems and use County-supported software
Strong communication skills and ability to build positive working relationships
Ability to work independently, respond to service calls/snow operations
Technical training in automotive or heavy equipment preferred
Proficient in diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of gas and diesel engines, drivetrains, and complex mechanical systems
Advanced knowledge of preventive maintenance, hydraulics, high-pressure air/water systems, and electronic/electrical systems
Skilled in welding, fabrication, and modification of parts and equipment
Ability to accurately estimate repair needs, costs, and time
Thorough understanding of applicable laws, codes, and safety practices
Ability to operate heavy equipment and vehicles safely
Strong recordkeeping skills using automated fleet management systems
Effective communication and teamwork; ability to provide guidance to less experienced staff
Ability to work independently, respond to service calls, and participate in scheduled snow operations
Expert knowledge of advanced diagnostics and major overhauls for engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, and computerized systems
Specialized expertise in heavy equipment systems (tracks, rollers, conveyors, air brake systems, after-treatment/emission systems)
Mastery of welding, fabrication, and complex body/chassis repair
Ability to lead diagnostics, assign work priorities, and mentor other technicians
Proficient in purchasing parts/materials and ensuring accurate documentation in automated systems
Deep understanding of safety regulations and ability to model best practices
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide technical direction to peers
Availability to respond to service calls and snow emergencies as required
Two (2) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles or equipment
Automotive and/or heavy equipment experience desired
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Graduate from automotive or heavy equipment technical training preferred
Must have a valid Colorado Driver's License with no restrictions
Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire, a valid Colorado commercial driver's license, class 'B'
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a diesel emissions license may also be required
Obtain and maintain one (1) required ASE certification within one year of employment
Three (3) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles and equipment
Must possess and maintain two (2) ASE certifications within 1 year of employment
Eight (8) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles and equipment
Five (5) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles and equipment and graduation from an automotive or heavy equipment technical training program
Graduate from automotive or heavy equipment technical training is preferred and may substitute 3 years' required experience
Obtaining or possessing ASE Master Certification in either Automotive or Medium and Heavy Truck is required within eighteen (18) months of hire
Must pass a criminal background check
Fleet Technicians must provide their own tools required to perform automotive repair and maintenance
Adams County is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to conduct pre-employment drug screens, background checks and motor vehicle record checks
A successful candidate must pass all of the above, including a DOT physical and criminal background check
Operate automobiles and heavy equipment safely. Must implement safe driving principles and practices
All levels require a moderate level of physical endurance including the ability to: Stand for extended periods of time, Ability to lift up to 75 pounds unassisted, Ability to push and/or pull heavy objects in excess of 100 pounds with assistance, Ability to: bend, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach overhead, twist, crawl, Ability to climb using a step stool or ladder to perform some job duties, May need to work in confined areas
May be required to work in cold or hot temperatures, May be exposed to loud noises, May be exposed to various chemicals including toxic waste, May be exposed to dust or other allergens, May be exposed to possible electrical hazards

Preferred

Technical training in automotive or heavy equipment preferred
Graduate from automotive or heavy equipment technical training preferred
