Outagamie County is seeking an Environmental Education Assistant to support educational and recreational programs at Mosquito Hill Nature Center. The role involves assisting naturalists with ecology programs, maintaining educational displays, and caring for nature center animals.

Responsibilities

Assist staff naturalists with, or independently lead, age-appropriate ecology, environmental education, and outdoor recreation programs for children, youth, families, and/or the general public
Support the planning, preparation, and implementation of the Summer Ecology Day Camp program, including activity setup, participant supervision, and program delivery
Research, develop, update, and implement program topics, lesson plans, and hands-on activities to ensure educational content is current, engaging, and aligned with learning objectives
Develop, maintain, and update educational and interpretive displays, exhibits, and materials within the nature center and on the grounds
Provide daily care for nature center animals, including feeding, habitat cleaning, monitoring animal health and behavior, and assisting with animal-related educational programming
Assist with daily operations of the nature center, including maintaining the interpretive building to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for visitors
Greet and interact with visitors, answer general questions, and provide basic information about programs, facilities, and natural resources
Utilize proper safety practices when working with the public, animals, tools, and equipment
Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall mission and operations of the nature center

Required

Must be 18 years old or older
Must have a valid driver's license and maintain
High school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) required
Attention to detail in program planning and execution
Time management to balance multiple responsibilities effectively
Basic computer skills for research, documentation, and communication
Strong collaboration skills to assist staff naturalists and work as part of a team
Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and take initiative when needed
Skills in creating educational displays and interactive learning experiences
Creativity in planning events and activities for public participation
Basic understanding of local ecosystems, plants, and wildlife
Ability to research and update environmental education materials
Experience or willingness to learn animal care for educational purposes
Ability to walk, bend, stoop, lift, carry; push, pull, and otherwise move objects up to 50 pounds regularly, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics
May work outdoors, regardless of the weather. They may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions
Must be able to hike on uneven trails and endure the outdoors in all types of weather conditions

Preferred

Enrollment at a college as a Junior/Senior working in a Natural Resource field, Environmental Education program, or related degree is preferred but not required
