Environmental Lab Intern - Paid

The City of Delray Beach is seeking an Environmental Lab Intern to assist with various laboratory tasks related to water quality testing. The intern will be responsible for sample collection, laboratory analysis, data management, and ensuring regulatory compliance within the Utilities Department.

Responsibilities

Assist in the collection of potable and non-potable water samples and perform field testing both on-site and off-site in accordance with Florida DEP Standard Operating Procedures and CDB Quality Assurance Plan
Assist in conducting physical, chemical, and biological analyses on collected samples using EPA and SM approved methods, ensuring compliance with NELAP requirements
Assist in maintaining and generating records of sample collection and analysis. Perform data entry and manage the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Prepare reagents, calibrate laboratory instruments, and ensure all analytical equipment is maintained in proper working order
Assist in managing inventory levels of laboratory supplies and equipment, initiating requests for new or replacement materials as needed
Assist in ensuring the laboratory adheres to local, state, and federal regulations, including safety standards and quality control programs
Assist in organizing and maintaining laboratory files, scan documents, and handle general inquiries, providing exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders
Assist in supporting the coordination of the laboratory's safety program, ensuring a safe working environment
Contribute to special projects, research initiatives, and cross-departmental collaborations when needed
Perform any additional tasks as required to support the Utilities Laboratory objectives

Required

Currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution or recent graduate majoring in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field
Basic understanding of laboratory practices, safety protocols, data management, and LIMs system
Basic written and verbal communication skills
Ability to handle multiple tasks and work both independently and collaboratively
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Preferred

Basic knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and standard testing procedures
