Environmental Analysis and Review Specialist Internship

The State of Wisconsin is looking to hire an Environmental Analysis and Review Specialist intern for summer 2026. This internship opportunity provides real-world experience in environmental reviews, data analysis, and interagency coordination while ensuring compliance with environmental laws for transportation projects.

Responsibilities

Assisting in transportation project reviews with staff from WisDOT and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to facilitate wetland determination data collection and reporting, including GIS (Geographic Information Systems) maps to identify the location and type of wetlands within the project area
Collecting hydrologic data at WisDOT wetland mitigation sites and evaluate the data to ensure compliance with regulations and performance standards set forth by United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and WDNR
Searching environmental databases to prepare Phase 1 Hazardous Materials Assessments and ensure cross-database accuracy to inform project teams of the need for further hazardous materials investigations
Inspecting structures (i.e., bridges, culverts) for endangered species, such as bats, to ensure compliance with the Endangered Species Act

Required

Must be enrolled in a program related to environmental science, ecology, biology, earth science, water resources, environmental policy, or a closely related field
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) or a similar software
Experience providing administrative support, including tasks such as emailing, researching, and file management that demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills
Experience with data collection, analysis, and reporting

Preferred

Education background and/or experience with ArcGIS (or a similar program)
