Research & Evaluation Intern

Brave Like Me Foundation is dedicated to bringing courage, comfort, and joy to children with complex medical conditions and their families. They are seeking a Research & Evaluation Intern to support the design and implementation of evaluation tools that measure the impacts of their programs on children's emotional well-being and family connection.

Responsibilities

Conduct literature reviews to inform Brave Like Me programming across Brave Pets, Brayden’s Books, and Brave Friends Adventures, covering human–pet bonds, therapeutic storytelling and literacy, social inclusion and friendship-building, trauma-informed care, and emotional well-being for pediatric patients and families
Assist with the development of frameworks identifying key inputs, activities, outputs, and short-, intermediate-, and long-term outcomes
Assist in defining time-bound outcome measures (e.g., immediate, 24–72 hours post-visit, longer-term reflection)
Track and organize program outputs (e.g., number of reunions, visit duration, pet types, participation trends)
Assist in identifying and monitoring indicators related to:
Emotional affect and mood stability
Anxiety or distress reduction
Engagement in care
Family emotional well-being
Support data entry, cleaning, and basic analysis
Assist with refinement and testing of evaluation tools, including:
Observation checklists
Family and caregiver surveys
Child-friendly mood or affect scales
Staff and Child Life feedback forms
Support pilot testing and recommend improvements to ensure tools are clear, trauma-informed, and developmentally appropriate

Required

Current undergraduate or graduate student in psychology, public health, social work, sociology, education, nonprofit evaluation, or a related field
Strong interest in program evaluation, child well-being, or healthcare-adjacent research
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Comfortable working with both qualitative and quantitative information
Strong written communication skills
Ability to approach sensitive topics with empathy, professionalism, and discretion

Preferred

Experience with basic research methods, surveys, or data analysis is a plus (but not required)
