Executive Director

The Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (WACDL) is seeking a dynamic Executive Director to provide strategic leadership and operational management for the organization. The role involves overseeing programs, enhancing membership services, and managing fundraising initiatives to support the mission of WACDL.

Non-profit Organization Management

Responsibilities

Provide strategic and operational leadership to ensure effective functioning of the Association
Oversee WACDL’s programs, resources, and day-to-day operations
Draft and oversee position papers, policy statements, public comments, and organizational announcements
Provide comprehensive staff support to the Board of Governors, Executive Committee, committees, and task forces
In partnership with the Program Coordinator, schedule meetings; draft agendas; set committee goals; and prepare and distribute materials
Attend meetings and track follow-up and action items
Incorporate feedback from Board and committee leadership into finalized work products and recommendations
Develop and maintain committee and task force guidelines, charters, timelines, and operating practices
Support onboarding and ongoing coordination of committee chairs and members
Support onboarding of new Board members and officers
Draft, maintain, and update governance policies and procedures
Assist with annual goal-setting, strategic priorities, and evaluation processes
Supervise and support staff and contractors, including hiring, onboarding, training, task assignment, and performance evaluation
Foster a collaborative, accountable, mission-aligned work culture
Prepare the annual budget with the Treasurer
Monitor and manage the Board-approved budget and provide financial reporting
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
Plan and execute major WACDL events, including the Annual Conference, Holiday Party & Auction, and CLE programs
Negotiate contracts with venues, hotels, vendors, and service providers
Secure and manage sponsorships and donor relationships
Support fundraising initiatives tied to events
Oversee CLE programs, publications, listservs, and online tools
Evaluate member services and recommend improvements
Work with the Legislative Committee to set priorities and strategy
Draft policy papers, legislative comment letters, testimony materials, and advocacy communications
Monitor legislative, administrative, and judicial developments affecting criminal defense
Support member engagement in advocacy efforts
Develop and implement strategies to grow and retain membership
Draft, edit, and oversee organizational communications
Oversee newsletters and publications
Guide development and improvement of the WACDL website and digital platforms
Serve as liaison to NACDL, partner organizations, sponsors, donors, and stakeholders
Represent WACDL in coalition and advocacy efforts

Required

Demonstrated commitment to WACDL's mission and the rights of the accused
Bachelor's degree
Valid driver's license
Ability to travel as required

Preferred

Nonprofit or association leadership experience
Event planning and fundraising experience
Contract negotiation and budget management
Experience working with volunteer boards
Familiarity with AMS platforms and remote collaboration tools
Sponsorship development and donor stewardship
Knowledge of legislative processes
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Knowledge of criminal defense or the criminal legal system strongly preferred
