Responsibilities

Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot life sciences lab equipment, including flow cytometers, microscopes, PCR machines, and gel imaging systems
Support daily lab operations, including inventory management, supply ordering, and housekeeping
Assist researchers with experimental setup, sample preparation, and lab techniques such as cell culture, tissue processing, and microscopy
Deliver core and shared lab- and equipment-specific training across research environments, including nanobiology, soft matter, genomics, biocleanrooms, and microscopy labs
Provide technical guidance to staff and users on equipment use and lab procedures
Support remote and on-site user services, coordinating with JSNN leadership to address user needs
Ensure JSNN lab safety policies, programs, and procedures comply with institutional, state, and federal regulations
Conduct routine lab and equipment inspections and develop new policies and SOPs in coordination with JSNN staff and NC A&T and UNC Greensboro EHS offices
Identify potential hazards and collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to implement corrective actions
Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, and corrective actions; document safety protocols and SOP updates
Serve as a resource for interpreting and applying safety regulations and best practices in laboratory settings
Provide lab safety training class and SOP guidance to faculty, staff, students, and other users, including biosafety, cleanroom safety, chemical hygiene, PPE use, and emergency procedures
Facilitate the onboarding of new researchers
Ensure completion of lab-specific safety orientation and documentation
Promote a proactive safety culture through outreach, lab visits, and communication with research teams
Manage labeling, storage, segregation, collection, and documentation of chemical and hazardous wastes, coordinating central storage and vendor pickups
Manage biohazard collection and sterilization, train users, and enforce safety policies and procedures
Maintain safety supplies and centralized programs, including PPE, lab coats, spill kits, and emergency response tools
Support compliance with EPA, OSHA, and institutional regulations for hazardous materials and waste management, including maintenance of chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Perform routine checks of emergency equipment (eyewash stations, safety showers, spill kits, fire extinguishers) and specialized lab systems (fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, cleanrooms)
Respond to minor spills or lab incidents, assist with containment, and participate in post-incident investigations and emergency drills
Monitor environmental parameters in specialized lab spaces and maintain calibration and service records for safety-related equipment
Collaborate with JSNN leadership and institutional EHS offices to support continuous improvement of safety programs and laboratory practices
Other related tasks as needed

Required

BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN A DISCIPLINE RELATED TO THE AREA OF ASSIGNMENT; OR EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. ALL DEGREES MUST BE RECEIVED FROM APPROPRIATELY ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS

Preferred

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental health and safety, or a related scientific discipline
At least 3–4 years of hands-on laboratory experience, including familiarity with basic lab procedures and equipment
Understanding of laboratory safety practices, chemical hygiene, and regulatory compliance (OSHA, EPA, biosafety standards)
Ability to conduct routine lab inspections and maintain safety documentation
