Boat Mechanic

Southwest Shipyard, LP provides various marine services and is seeking a skilled Boat Mechanic to join their maintenance team. The Boat Mechanic will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical systems on marine vessels to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Responsibilities

Inspect and diagnose mechanical issues on various types of marine vessels (tugs, barges, crew boats, etc.)
Perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel and gas engines, outboard motors, inboard systems, pumps, hydraulic systems, and generators
Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems using testing equipment and manuals
Repair or replace engine components, gearboxes, shafts, propellers, steering systems, and fuel systems
Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations when working with hazardous materials or in confined spaces
Maintain detailed records of inspections, maintenance performed, and parts used
Read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, and schematics
Collaborate with other trades (e.g., welders, electricians) on vessel overhauls and repairs
Operate forklifts, cranes, and other machinery as needed for mechanical repairs
Assist with haul-outs, dry dock operations, and sea trials as required

Required

High school diploma or GED; technical or trade school certification preferred
Minimum 3 years of experience as a marine mechanic or equivalent mechanical experience
Proficiency with diesel and gas engine repair, marine hydraulics, and propulsion systems
Strong understanding of maritime safety standards and procedures
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and in physically demanding environments
Must be able to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces
Basic computer and diagnostic tool skills a plus
