Outreach and Education Intern
Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River (FNFSR) is seeking an intern to support their outreach and education efforts aimed at improving water quality in the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. The intern will assist with outreach to the agricultural community, facilitate educational programming, and contribute to various conservation initiatives.
Responsibilities
Meeting regularly with FNFSR representatives, organizational partners, and community members to advance our mission and carry out projects
Assist with the development of informational materials and/or mailings related to the implementation of nutrient management and soil conservation efforts on farms and small landholdings
Attend, assist with, and document conservation “speed dating” events intended to connect farmers with support to implement best management practices on their farms to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment pollution
Assist the Executive Director in the creation-, delivery-, and documentation- of presentations to civic groups (such as Ruritan, FFA, Rotary, Farm Bureau) about practices that reduce water pollution on farms and small landholdings
Present to the FNFSR board about these efforts
Help organize small stakeholder engagement conversation events
Assist with- and help organize- cultural events focused on the river, watershed issues, and/or water quality
Help plan- and organize- riparian buffer maintenance or planting volunteer events
Help plan- and organize- Earth Day river cleanup events and use these efforts to spread the word about our agricultural outreach efforts
Contribute to our communications and outreach efforts
Assist our environmental education staff in the provision of educational programming
And other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Be enrolled in a community college or university program
Be available for at least 10 hours/week at least 12 of the 16 weeks in the term
Have strong interest in water quality, environmental issues, conservation, or related topics
Be able to articulate a connection between their intended career path and the internship
Have access to reliable transportation throughout the internship and willing to travel, as needed, to support outreach and education efforts
Provide their own reliable laptop computer or other equivalent computing device and an internet connection capable of sustaining videoconferencing calls at a good quality level
Show initiative and maturity when assisting the organization's efforts to carry out its mission
Preferred
Second semester Sophomore (or second year), Junior (or third year), or Senior (or fourth year) in college or non-traditional student (such as career switchers, those who attended college after considerable work experience)
Background knowledge in environmental issues, conservation, water quality, agriculture, or related areas
Coursework in environmental science, environmental studies, environmental engineering, agricultural management, natural resource management, conservation, biology, chemistry, communication, or other related disciplines
Experience with environmental education
Experience with community engagement efforts that include people with a range of different experiences, expectations, values, and backgrounds
