Safety Manager
Hermanson Company is a standout Mechanical company that has been doing business in the Puget Sound area since 1979. They are seeking a Safety Manager who will be responsible for managing safety and health programs, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and fostering a culture of safety within the organization.
Responsibilities
Responsible to see that every leader and every individual employed by Hermanson asks themselves and their teams, daily: “Who did I inspire or motivate today to have a “Safety Attitude for Life”?
Manage Hermanson Company’s safety and health programs and see yearly continuous improvement of the company EMR and RIR within set yearly budgets
Responsible for the scheduling and managing of Hermanson safety professionals and maintain an accurate utilization schedule
With assistance of the Director of Labor establish yearly safety budgets for all safety training, education, PPE, equipment, etc., and manage to those set budgets
Responsible for the management of open injury claims, back-to-work program for light duty and “kept on salary” employees. Coordinate efforts with assistance from the Director of Labor and Approach retro group manager
Make necessary updates and additions in accordance with Washington State laws and regulations. These programs will relate to worker safety, property protection, motor vehicle safety, and general public and customer safety. Requires obtaining and maintaining a working knowledge of Hermanson Company operations and jobs, so that exposures may be identified, addressed and mitigated
Manage the process so that all accidents, incidents, and “near misses” are investigated
Assist Foremen and provide monthly feedback to Hermanson management on activities and results related to accidents, their root causes, costs and how not to repeat them
Responsible for putting together site-specific safety manuals, job hazard analyses, maintaining and updating the company’s accident prevention program and, with assistance of third-party sources, review all material regularly to assure compliance with changing laws and regulations, and adopt industry best practices
Tour jobsites and shops on a regular basis with staff and Foremen, Superintendents and Project Managers and assist Field and Shop Foremen in identifying jobsite hazards and conditions and any unsafe employee work habits
Hold monthly safety committee meetings with assistance of Foremen and Superintendents
Ensure direct reports are making sure all job sites and the shop are conducting Monday morning safety meetings and maintain copies of meetings on file
With assistance of Director of Labor, maintain membership in industry safety programs i.e. SMACNA, MCA, CIC, to stay current on industry trends and legal requirements
Review Hermanson safety standards and rules periodically to remove any outdated rules and initiate new rules as necessary to keep current and updated
Ensure direct reports are assist General Superintendents and Safety Director with leadership training for Foremen as it relates to safety
With assistance from Finance, maintain safety KPI's and records and present monthly to management to keep the entire company abreast of safety-related trends and issues
Review, maintain and produce yearly OSHA 300 Log
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, related field, 5 years of safety experience in the construction industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience
3 years' experience in Safety
Supervisory experience and the ability to communicate effectively with field and office personnel required
Ability to provide leadership and inspire exceptional cooperation from foremen, crews, and staff
Certification to teach OSHA 10/30, forklift certification, first aid/CPR and respiratory fitting is required and must be maintained
Understanding of L&I regulations and basic medical and worker's compensation terminology so as to communicate effectively with claims managers and care providers and stay abreast of legal changes to WAC safety and health codes
Work closely with line supervision and management so as to facilitate the training required in the field and shop, including knowing what topics need to be presented and when
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, and to write routine reports and correspondence
Strong presentation skills to be able to speak effectively before small and large groups of managers, customers, and/or employees
Physically able to negotiate the difficult conditions often encountered on job sites. This includes the occasional need to climb steep stairs, ride in scissor lifts and boom lifts, and work in hot and cold environments. Must be capable of obtaining customer and general contractor approval to walk job sites
This position is required to support field personnel and service our customers on projects. Depending on project requirements this may require full time presence on the site and in some cases, presence before and after the project scheduled hours. Flexibility on hours and location of work is dependent on project requirements as determined by your supervisor
This position requires the ability to walk and maintain balance over rough, icy, or muddy ground, climb stairs and ladders, work safely at heights without fear, and to work effectively while exposed to the weather for long periods
