Staff Accountant

BetterLife is a member-owned not-for-profit life insurance organization seeking a Staff Accountant to join their Finance team. The role involves supporting day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial records, and assisting with financial reporting and auditing processes.

Responsibilities

Assist with the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements
Compile and organize schedules and supporting documentation for financial reporting
Input data into statutory reporting software (Wings) under supervision
Assist with state and NAIC filings
Support variance analysis by gathering data and preparing preliminary explanations
Assist with the collection and organization of interim and annual audit requests
Provide supporting documentation in response to audit inquiries as directed
Complete bank reconciliations for assigned accounts
Identify reconciling items and escalate unresolved issues to senior staff
Post routine journal entries related to bank activity
Assist with posting and reconciling policy activity
Assist with investment and mortgage-related entries and reconciliations
Maintain fixed asset records and assist with reconciliations
Record reinsurance activity
Assist with reconciling investment balances and tracking outstanding items
Assist with general ledger reconciliations
Assist with review of daily bank activity
Distribute NSF information to appropriate teams
Process monthly commission payments
Forward verified statements to Accounts Payable for processing
Perform other accounting-related duties and projects as assigned

Required

Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to manage routine deadlines with guidance
Ability to follow established processes and procedures
Basic analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
Familiarity with accounting software, preferably Great Plains
Proficient with Microsoft Excel

Preferred

Internship in accounting with statutory experience is a plus
