Power System Engineer
Metric Geo is seeking an experienced Power System Protection Engineer to join their specialized Protective Relay Settings team. The role involves acting as a subject matter expert in power system protection, developing protective relay settings, and mentoring junior engineers while driving technical excellence across projects.
Responsibilities
Act as a technical subject matter expert in power system protection
Develop protective relay settings in accordance with industry standards, best practices, and client requirements
Perform relay setting calculations and create downloadable setting files using manufacturer software (SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista, etc.)
Utilize system modeling and analysis tools (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM)
Develop and modify protection and control logic and schemes
Prepare complex engineering calculations, studies, and technical deliverables
Lead or support moderately complex projects, including schedule, budget, and quality oversight
Review and QA/QC engineering work performed by junior team members
Coordinate with internal teams, external stakeholders, and clients
Support proposal development, scopes of work, schedules, and engineering estimates
Mentor and develop early-career engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing
Qualification
Required
8–10+ years of experience in the Transmission, Distribution, or Power Generation industry
Strong background in P&C design (one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams)
Extensive experience developing protective relay settings
Proficiency with system modeling tools (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM)
Deep understanding of protection schemes and philosophies for substations and renewable collector systems
Experience with Mathcad and Excel for relay calculations
Familiarity with communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus)
Working knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, SV)
Knowledge of NERC PRC standards and related industry codes
Proven ability to lead small projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field) from an accredited program
Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience
