Tax Operations Leader $200k
Whitman Advisory Job Community is a premier CPA firm, and they are seeking a Tax Operations Director to lead the operational strategy and execution for the Tax practice. This role involves ensuring staffing aligns with demand, improving workflows, and providing leadership with necessary reporting for timely decisions.
Responsibilities
Own tax resource planning and scheduling across compliance and advisory workstreams
Build forecasts for seasonal demand, capacity, and utilization to support deadlines and business priorities
Implement staffing plans that balance workloads equitably while meeting client commitments
Define and manage service-level expectations (SLAs) for staffing requests, turnaround times, and deliverables
Identify bottlenecks early and implement corrective staffing/workflow solutions
Standardize workflows across core tax services (individual, business, state/local, extensions, estimated payments, provisions, etc.)
Develop operational playbooks and documentation to ensure consistency and reduce rework
Lead continuous improvement initiatives (Lean mindset) to improve cycle time, quality, and efficiency
Support integrations related to M&A, newly acquired practices, and senior hires to ensure operational consistency
Drive onboarding and training programs for Tax staff, including coordination with global/offshore teams where applicable
Partner with HR and Tax leadership on performance processes: coaching support, development plans, merit and promotion cycles
Create operating rhythms (weekly capacity reviews, pipeline check-ins, deadline readiness) that drive accountability
Optimize and improve adoption of operational and tax systems including STAR, CCH ProSystem fx/Axcess, SharePoint, Power BI, Workday, Monday.com
Build dashboards and reporting that provide real-time insights into capacity, deadlines, workflow progress, risks, and outcomes
Ensure reporting is actionable and supports leadership decisions in staffing, engagement planning, and operational improvements
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree required
Public accounting background with experience in tax operations, tax administration, or practice management
Demonstrated success managing complex scheduling and resource planning across multiple teams
Strong leadership experience with multi-level teams; able to influence senior stakeholders
Project management and process improvement experience
High comfort with data, dashboards, and operational systems
Excellent communication, analytical, and stakeholder management skills
Preferred
Master's and/or CPA
