Vice President of R&D - (Spatial Omics)
Hartmann Young is seeking a Vice President of Assay Development to lead the technical, scientific, and people strategy for advanced molecular assays. This role requires a hands-on leader who combines deep technical expertise with the ability to mentor and drive urgency across teams in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
Define and execute a clear multi-year technical vision and development roadmap for molecular assays, aligned with business priorities and market needs
Own assay robustness, performance, and data quality, ensuring commercial-grade standards for sensitivity, reproducibility, scalability, and reliability
Lead hands-on assay development and optimisation using targeted approaches, Design of Experiments (DoE), and statistical rigor to reduce variability and support scale-up
Serve as the senior technical authority across assay development, providing expert guidance in molecular biology, genomics, nucleic acid chemistry, and multiplexed workflows
Lead complex troubleshooting and root cause analysis, working closely with the team to resolve challenging scientific and technical issues
Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing Assay Development team, fostering a culture of accountability, urgency, scientific rigor, and continuous improvement
Partner closely with R&D, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Product teams to ensure seamless assay development, integration, and delivery
Establish best practices for documentation, design controls, and technology transfer, while managing budgets, timelines, and resources to deliver milestones on time and on budget
Qualification
Required
Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Genomics, Bioengineering, or a related field
10+ years of progressive experience in assay development within biotechnology, diagnostics, or life sciences tools
At least 5 years in a senior leadership or management role, with demonstrated success leading and scaling technical teams
Strong hands-on experience with complex genomics-based or highly multiplexed molecular or imaging-based assays
Proven track record advancing assays from late-stage development through verification, validation, and commercial launch
Demonstrated ability to stay close to the science while mentoring, coaching, and developing teams
Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and accountability; comfortable operating in a demanding, fast-moving environment
Willingness and ability to work on-site five days per week (non-negotiable)
