Senior Project Accountant

LHH is partnering with a large construction company with significant East Coast operations that is looking to add a Senior Project Accountant to their team. The role involves overseeing job cost accounting, preparing owner billings, and monitoring project budgets while serving as a finance partner to project managers and field teams.

Responsibilities

Oversee end‑to‑end job cost accounting, including coding, recording, analyzing, and reconciling project costs for large and mid-sized construction projects
Prepare, review, and submit monthly owner billings, pay applications, and supporting documentation in line with contract requirements
Monitor project budgets, commitments, change orders, and financial progress; identify variances and recommend corrective actions
Maintain WIP schedules, analyze earned revenue, and support monthly project financial reviews
Process subcontractor and vendor invoices, ensuring contract compliance, lien waivers, insurance requirements, and approval workflows
Support cash flow forecasting and monitor payment schedules, receivables, and retention
Generate monthly project cost reports, forecasts, and ad hoc financial analyses for management and operations teams
Participate in project review meetings, providing financial insights, risk flags, and updated projections
Serve as a finance partner to Project Managers, field teams, and leadership—ensuring financial accuracy and operational transparency
Lead or contribute to workflow improvements, system enhancements, and documentation upgrades (e.g., billing processes, cost controls, reporting templates)
Train and mentor junior accountants; provide guidance on accounting best practices

Required

5+ years of accounting experience, ideally within the construction, engineering, or related project-based industries
Strong understanding of project accounting principles, job costing, WIP, AIA billings, percentage of completion, and financial reporting
Familiarity with contracts, lien requirements, compliance documentation, and change order workflows
Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Effective written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving

Preferred

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered
Experience with industry-specific platforms (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore) is a plus
