Staff Accountant (Real Estate / Development)
Vaco by Highspring is seeking an experienced Staff Accountant to support the accounting operations of a real estate development portfolio. This full-charge role is responsible for day-to-day accounting, job cost tracking, construction draws, and financial reporting for multiple properties and development projects.
Responsibilities
Manage job cost accounting and construction draw processing for development projects
Prepare schedules of values and submit construction-in-progress (CIP) draws to lenders
Reconcile project costs to the general ledger and investigate variances
Partner with the development team to gather information for monthly draw submissions
Prepare journal entries for non-recurring and significant development-related transactions
Review closing documents and record transactions in accordance with GAAP
Perform full-cycle accounting for 15-20 properties
Maintain the general ledger, including journal entries, cash receipts, coding, and data entry
Prepare month-end accruals, amortizations, and reconciliations
Process Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
Complete monthly reconciliations for cash, receivables, payables, accruals, and lender obligations
Ensure timely payment of mortgage obligations and real estate taxes
Enter new leases and process recurring tenant billings
Perform annual CAM reconciliations
Track security deposits and monitor utility transitions
Maintain accurate lease and tenant documentation
Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple entities within a 5-day close
Calculate and file 1099s
Prepare workpapers and supporting documentation for annual external audits
Represent the organization professionally when interacting with tenants, coworkers, and external partners
Assist with administrative and ad hoc projects as needed
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience
Hands-on experience with real estate construction and/or development accounting
Strong reconciliation and analytical skills
Excellent organizational, communication, and time-management abilities
Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
Team-oriented mindset with strong problem-solving skills
Advanced proficiency in Excel
Strong working knowledge of Word and Outlook
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
Hands-on experience with real estate construction and/or development accounting strongly preferred
Experience with MRI property management/accounting software is a plus
