Excess & Surplus Claims Specialist

Responsibilities

Investigate, evaluate, and resolve E&S claims across multiple lines of business, including general liability, professional liability, property, and specialty coverages
Analyze policy language, endorsements, exclusions, and conditions specific to non-admitted insurance programs
Establish coverage positions and issue reservation of rights or denial letters when appropriate
Coordinate with brokers, insureds, third-party administrators, adjusters, and defense counsel
Manage complex, high-severity, or litigated claims through resolution
Monitor litigation, review legal invoices, and control claim expenses
Ensure compliance with surplus lines regulations and internal claims handling guidelines
Maintain accurate claim files and document all activities in the claims management system
Participate in claim reviews, audits, and loss trend analyses
Provide input to underwriting on loss activity and emerging exposures

Required

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
3+ years of claims handling experience, preferably in Excess & Surplus or specialty lines
Strong understanding of insurance coverage analysis and claims investigation
Experience managing litigated and complex claims
Knowledge of surplus lines regulations and state-specific compliance requirements preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational and time-management abilities

Preferred

Professional designations such as AIC, CPCU, or SCLA
Experience working with managing general agents (MGAs) and wholesale brokers
Familiarity with multiple jurisdictions and regulatory environments
Ability to handle ambiguity and unique risk profiles common to E&S business
