Senior Heavy Equipment Operator – Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS)

NEOGOV is seeking a Senior Heavy Equipment Operator for the City of San José’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services. This role involves operating and overseeing heavy construction equipment, supervising crews, and ensuring safety and compliance with established procedures. The operator will also provide training to staff and manage work activities to meet production goals.

Responsibilities

Supervise and participate in projects involving playground repair and installation, backflow repair and installation, irrigation repair, park renovations, demolition, and debris removal to approved waste facilities
Operate and oversee the operation of motor graders, excavators, skip loaders, bulldozers, loaders, tractors, backhoes, and other specialized equipment
Ensure work is performed in accordance with established procedures, safety standards, and project specifications
Plan, schedule, assign, and monitor work activities to meet production goals; continuously evaluate work progress and employee performance
Train Heavy Equipment Operators in assigned duties, proper equipment use, and skill development; assess and document progress
Coordinate the purchase of materials, equipment, and services; maintain inventory and control of supplies, spare parts, and equipment
Promote and enforce safe working practices and conditions for assigned crews
Work in confined spaces and on varying shifts as required by operational needs

Required

Completion of high school, or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate
Four (4) years of experience operating heavy motorized equipment such as that used in the construction trades
Possession of a valid State of California Class A driver's license with applicable endorsements is required
Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations; completion of an apprenticeship is desirable
Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel
Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue; determines the significance of problem(s); collects information; uses logic and intuition to arrive at decisions or solutions to problems that achieve the desired outcome
Ensures support for projects and implements agency goals and strategic objectives
Sets effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources; provides motivational support; empowers others; assigns decision-making and work functions to others in an appropriate manner to maximize organizational and individual effectiveness
