Responsibilities
Own plumbing design execution from basis-of-design through permit and issued-for-construction (IFC) deliverables
Serve as Lead Designer: establish basis of design, system selection, equipment sizing, and document strategy from kickoff through IFC
Deliver strong 'core plumbing' design: sanitary and vent, domestic hot/cold water, water heating and recirculation, storm drainage, natural gas, and related equipment (e.g., water heaters, booster pumps, sumps, ejectors, interceptors where applicable)
Lead and execute specialty/process utility systems as required by the project and client, such as CDA, vacuum, RO/DI water, compressed gases, lab/process waste, and other owner-specific process piping
Coordinate process utility requirements with owners/vendors (basis-of-design, equipment cut sheets, connection points, pressures/flows, redundancy needs) and translate them into clear, buildable drawings and specifications
Apply California codes (CPC) and local requirements, including AHJ amendments and applicable Title 24 / CALGreen requirements (as applicable)
Own QA/QC at milestones and before issuance: calculations/assumptions, pipe sizing, schedules, details, notes, coordination, and overall constructability checks
Improve repeatability: checklists, templates, internal standards, and technical training content
Assist Project Managers in presenting and explaining proposals, systems, findings and options to clients, general contractors and engineers
Partner with Project Managers to refine scope, assumptions, and design options; support client/GC communication on system approaches and tradeoffs
Represent United Mechanical as a design professional at project design meetings
Perform and document field surveys of existing site conditions and equipment; participate in site walks and existing-conditions investigations
Provide field support during construction: submittal review, RFIs, design clarifications, and evaluation of field-driven change requests (as needed)
Coordinate with architects, clients, consultants, and trade partners (in-house and outsourced) to resolve clashes, conflicts, and constructability issues
Coordinate project-based engineering deliverables across in-house and outsourced engineering resources
Guide and mentor junior engineers through real project work: fundamentals, codes, design judgment, and document quality
Give Engineering leadership clear feedback on training needs, performance growth, and where the team needs better tooling or standards
Qualification
Required
7-10 years' experience in the commercial construction space
4-year engineering degree or equivalent
An excellent understanding of plumbing engineering fundamentals, system types, equipment, installation standards, and procedures is necessary
The ability to assume responsibility, interface, and communicate with others is essential
Must be fully versed in local and State building codes
Proficient in AutoCAD
Preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, but not required
Revit experience preferred
Prior experience with a mechanical contractor or engineering consultant preferred
