Intern - Water Resources Stewardship

The City of Fort Collins is seeking a passionate and driven intern to join their Water Resources team for a unique and challenging summer experience. This internship offers a glimpse into water resource management, where you'll monitor and maintain the water supply system while gaining hands-on experience in a critical infrastructure sector.

Responsibilities

Monitor reservoir levels, dam conditions, and water diversions, meticulously recording data and estimating flows within our water system, including the crucial Michigan Ditch
Be ready to tackle high-depth snow removal operations, ensuring access to critical infrastructure during winter months
Participate in construction and maintenance projects on various structures and improvements across our water supply system and treatment facilities
Participate in general building maintenance (painting, cleaning, plumbing, carpentry, and welding) and maintain the Water Treatment Facility site (mowing, sprinkler repair, weed control)
Provide daily reports on reservoir and ditch readings, weather conditions, and river conditions to the Water Resource Engineer and the Water Resource and Planning Manager, contributing to informed decision-making
Execute planned water releases according to established plans, ensuring efficient and responsible water management
Intern will be required to spend three nights each week at Michigan Ditch cabins

Required

Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Water Resources Management, or a related field
Strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and a positive attitude
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Physical ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions
Valid driver's license
Willingness to live up in the mountains several weekdays each week for approximately 12 weeks over the summer
Valid driver's license
Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs
Availability to work on-site in diverse conditions (mountain, snow, etc.)

Preferred

Enjoy hands-on work and have a strong interest in environmental systems
Can work effectively outdoors in varying weather conditions
Have basic mechanical skills or a willingness to learn
Are detail-oriented, organized, and eager to contribute to meaningful projects
