The City of Madison is seeking motivated and talented interns to participate in the Affirmative Action Student Professionals in Residence (AASPIRE) internship program. This paid summer internship lasts for 8-10 weeks and offers a chance to work on meaningful projects while gaining experience in public service and developing essential skills.

Responsibilities

Expand Equitable Engagement: Develop strategies to empower and engage underrepresented communities, addressing barriers to participation in civic life
Community Outreach & Relationship-Building: Support voter education and civic engagement efforts by working directly with community members and local organizations
Strategic Communications & Marketing: Create culturally relevant social media content, digital materials, and outreach campaigns to amplify community voices
Collaboration & Innovation: Work with Clerk’s Office staff to explore new tools, narrative storytelling, and outreach strategies that reflect the needs of Madison’s residents
Conduct policy research and assist with the preparation of policy reports
Plan and develop marketing initiatives and complete projects related to branding, content creation, and social media marketing for alder events and Council initiatives. Update website and develop website content
Respond to phone calls, emails and other written communications
Support monitoring of ADA Transition Plan
Support planning for Disability Pride Madison and other Disability Pride month events and activities
Support City efforts towards equitable emergency planning
Support roll-out of Language Access Plan update
Update Disability Rights Commission project planning tools
Assist with creation of job skills bank
Assist with identifying skills-based career pathways
Assist with applying findings from the recently completed Citywide compensation study
Develop content for website, email, and social media campaigns
Assist with social media scheduling, content planning, and basic performance tracking
Taking, editing, and organizing photos of events or library activities
Assisting with or hosting promotional events during Parks Alive events, at Dream Bus visits, and in neighborhood libraries
Crafting event announcements and submitting announcements to local media
Writing press releases and media alerts
Identify, monitor, inventory and keep accurate record of plant and animal species
Survey parks for invasive species, safety hazards, aesthetics, and plant health
Remove invasive plants by manual, mechanical or chemical means including digging, hand pulling, mowing, foliar spraying, cut-stump treatments and others
Collect native seeds for use in park natural areas under the guidance of Parks staff
Support and provide guidance to volunteers in the field
Respond or refer direct inquiries about restoration work from residents in the field
Operate automotive and maintenance equipment such as pickup trucks, riding mowers, and Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs)
Remove trash from trailheads, parking lots and interior of parks, and assist with maintenance of grounds and trails
Grow reach and subscribers to all social media platforms of the Golf Program
Create automated campaigns through email that reach customers through strategic target goals
Collect and analyze data to identify consumer trends. Research consumer opinions and marketing strategies
Prepare marketing proposals and presentations based on need
Gather and understand data on campaign success and utilize information to adapt
Setup, facilitate, and complete marketing posts and presenting materials
Plan long range marketing materials for 5-month windows
Assist with facility and staff scheduling for multiple sites, including coordinating equipment, supplies, and community resources and obtaining the necessary event permits
Serve as an onsite point of contact for all events and assist with event setup and teardown
Prepare, sort and pack program materials in storage room and transport materials from storage to vehicle the office and onsite at various parks
Conduct program evaluations to ensure that high levels of program quality are always maintained
Participate in meetings, prepare event reports, and make presentations to community stakeholders as needed
Assist with recruiting assigned city staff, community partners, residents, volunteers, and vendors
Serve as the onsite support for all events and oversee event setup and teardown
Enforce rules, regulations, and safety precautions, evaluate safety concerns, and make recommendations for process improvements
Safely operate program vehicles and equipment
Become familiar with Area planning and Community Action Planning and assist in the development of these plans for Madison including but not limited to data collection, interviews and surveys, land use analysis and urban design, and public participation that engages residents, the business community, and stakeholders (nonprofits, neighborhood groups, schools, etc.) including diverse communities not typically represented in our planning processes
Become familiar with arts and cultural resources planning, and neighborhood grant projects, and assist with related tasks
Assist with writing, developing conceptual designs, and editing planning publications
Create marketing materials that the recruiting team will use for social media campaigns, specific advertising materials, outreach efforts that specifically target our applicant pool with a goal of increasing applications and reaching a broader group of applicants
Develop relevant content for social media in the form of social media posts, flyers, reels, stories, promotional videos, etc
Use Canva and other marketing tools to develop content including recruiting videos
Research and design new materials needed for career fairs and marketing efforts
Attend academy days and develop content to showcase the high level of training that is being taught
Use interview skills within the department to develop and highlight specialized units and create content based off these interviews
Review documents to update titles and roles based on new organizational structures
Review documents to update information based on new technologies and changes in process

Helping supervisors review forms and processes to identify opportunities to increase dignity in our interactions with individuals. These may include:

Options to make their own choices and maintain decision making power

Options for level of follow-up
Helping supervisors review website content to determine if additional information is needed in order to provide accountability, and equitable access to resources
Review documents for accessibility needs and assist in determining if/which materials should be translated into multiple languages
Help supervisors design/update a practical resource guide for staff and/or the public regarding commonly asked questions or next steps
Utilizing GIS and other tools to analyze data and evaluate opportunities to address gaps in existing infrastructure to improve safety on the City’s High Injury Network
Assisting in various aspects of the planning and/or project development process projects within the work plan, which may include Safe Routes to School planning, an updated Pedestrian Plan and an Asphalt Art project, among others
Supporting public education efforts by preparing social media posts, outreach materials, and assisting at public events, which may include engaging families at the City’s Parks Alive program, outreach with youth and seniors, and assisting in developing a quiz to support driver’s training programs to learn about Vision Zero treatments and goals
Assisting in drafting reports and presentations to communicate progress on Vision Zero goals
Collaborating with various departments to integrate equitable engagement best practices into Vision Zero engagement efforts
Support Safe Streets and Roads for All grant efforts through participation in project coordination meetings, community engagement, and materials preparation

Required

Currently enrolled in an Associate's, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree program
Those who have graduated from such programs since May of 2024 will also be considered
Participation in an employment program pre-approved by the City of Madison listed below since May of 2024: Centro Hispano, Forward Service Corporation, Latino Academy, Madison Black Chamber of Commerce, Operation Fresh Start, Urban League, WRTP-Big Step, YWCA Madison
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multicultural communities
Some positions will require possession of a valid driver's license

Bilingual in Spanish, Chinese and/or Hmong is preferred
