Genomic Epidemiologist

Responsibilities

Generate, compile, and analyze sequence data outputs from pathogens of public health importance
Integrate and visualize genomic data outputs with epidemiological and laboratory data to enhance genomic surveillance and support outbreak investigations
Liaise with infectious disease epidemiology programs within MDHHS to identify genomic epidemiology needs and advise on genomic epidemiology activities
Collaborate with bioinformaticians to identify issues or enhancements required for pathogen genomics bioinformatics pipelines
Support coordination and facilitation of pathogen genomics training sessions or workshops, including on-site logistics
Share summaries of projects and assessments via scientific publications and/or presentations
Participate in national collaborations to further the development and implementation of genomic epidemiology in public health
Provide assistance and insight for investigative work to develop improved analyses methodologies or services, as well as provide data for Department approved public health surveillance and research activities as needed
Perform other work-related duties as required by management
Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS

Required

MS, MPH, or PhD in Epidemiology, Microbiology, or a field related to the requirements of the position
12 months of experience within the field of infectious disease or public health
Knowledge of infectious disease genomics
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to coordinate and facilitate collaboration among partners
Ability to prepare technical reports, training materials, and papers related to the work
Ability to work well in team situations
Excellent organizational skills
Strong attention to detail
Ability to take initiative
Ability to be flexible
