Manager, Workstation and Network Support (WNS) - Library IT

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Library is seeking a Manager of Workstation and Network Support who is passionate about providing excellent customer service and fostering professional growth among staff. This role involves overseeing technology hardware and software management, ensuring security standards, and leading a team responsible for network and endpoint support across the Library system.

Responsibilities

Provide oversight for the entire lifecycle of technology hardware, while making sure purchasing processes are followed, security standards and guidelines are met, and surplus requirements are completed
Provide oversight for software application deployment to workstations and laptops across the Library
Act as the Library Network Administrator, the technical point of contact to campus
Prepare network plans, liaise with Technology Services network staff and coordinate network planning and implementation with Library IT, Library Facilities, and other appropriate Library units
Maintain database records of network and hardware inventory to enable data driven decision making and management
Establish, maintain, and enforce service management best practices, i.e. change control, that enable business continuity, disaster recovery, and secure environments
Prepare budget recommendations and technical specifications for equipment and software purchases
Work with colleagues at all levels within the Library to set direction and facilitate the accomplishment of goals and objectives for the group
Manage and supervise the daily activities of the workstation and network support team, set goals, define daily workflows, and make work assignments
Use common project management methodologies to ensure team projects, tasks, and initiatives are completed in time and scope
Observe and measure individual and group performance against internal service requirements and recommend modifications to existing processes and procedures in support of workstation and network support
Respond to critical service problems, which may occur outside of regular business hours
Provide reports, analyses, data and information, and recommendations to Director of Library IT and other Library leadership
Participate in the Library IT Leadership team and act as a liaison between the team and leadership
Review industry trends in hardware, endpoint management, and network services, and provide suggestions and recommended approaches for adoption, integration, service implementation, and service retirements of these technologies
Oversee the design, implementation, support, and life-cycle management of AV technologies in the Library
Develop strategic plans to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of endpoint management, network services, and hardware lifecycle management for the Library
Develop and maintain a group technical strategy and direction consistent with Library IT goals and objectives and industry best practices
Represent the Library in matters related to hardware purchasing, endpoint management and network services to campus and university system groups; external groups at the regional, national, or international levels; and vendors as appropriate
Perform technology consultations with Library staff and faculty to help match their needs to optimal solutions
Provide excellent customer service
Recruit, select, onboard, train, manage performance, and provide oversight for professional Workstation and Network Support staff
Supervise the work of Workstation and Network Support
Mentor, coach, and encourage professional development of staff
Oversee the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and management of hourly staff, either directly or indirectly
Research new technologies and their potential application in the Library to provide efficiencies, security, or added value for the organization

Required

Five (5) years (60 months) of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field, which includes experience in a supervisory or lead worker capacity
College course work which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT Systems, or closely related discipline may substitute for experience as follows: 30 semester hours equals 1 year (12 months) An Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals 18 months 90 semester hours equals two years (24 months) Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three years (36 months)
Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a supervisory or lead worker capacity in an IT environment
Demonstrated experience administering Windows or iOS operating systems
Demonstrated experience administering network configurations
Demonstrated experience managing objects in Active Directory
Demonstrated experience applying IT security best practices to a professional endpoint management environment

Preferred

Bachelor's or advanced degree
Four (4) or more years of experience hiring, training, and managing students or staff
Five (5) or more years of experience working in one or more of the following areas: general IT support, networking, endpoint management, AV support, or a related area
Experience identifying and implementing IT security standards in a professional endpoint management environment
Knowledge and experience with core campus technologies, including directory systems and endpoint management tools (i.e. MS Active Directory, SCCM, MECM, Intune, or Jamf Pro)
Experience with University or governmental purchasing processes
Experience managing projects involving multiple resources from within unit or across units
Professional Leadership or Management training
Experience troubleshooting complex technology systems
Experience working in a higher education environment
