The California Department of Justice is seeking an experienced Supervising Deputy Attorney General to join the newly-created Police Practices Section. This role involves directing a team of attorneys and support staff, conducting complex legal work related to policing practices, and overseeing investigations and legal actions in California.

Responsibilities

Directs, reviews, and monitors the work of a team of subordinate attorneys and analytical support staff
Evaluates the performance of subordinate attorneys and support staff
Provides training to subordinate attorneys and support staff
Handles general administrative matters
Interviews and selects, or actively participates in the interview and selection process for subordinate attorneys and support staff
Personally performs the most difficult and complex legal work related to jury trials, bench trials, writs, appeals, and administrative hearings

Required

Experience in handling complex, sensitive and difficult legal work
Ability to conduct and oversee pattern and practice investigations
Experience in bringing civil and potentially criminal actions
Experience in publishing public reports regarding issues relating to constitutional policing
Experience in evaluating the performance of subordinate attorneys and support staff
Experience in providing training to subordinate attorneys and support staff
Experience in handling general administrative matters
Experience in interviewing and selecting subordinate attorneys and support staff
Ability to perform difficult and complex legal work related to jury trials, bench trials, writs, appeals, and administrative hearings
Ability to exercise the highest level of independent judgment
