Lab Manager, Biology

Responsibilities
Manages operations of unit by setting priorities and enforcing regulations, internal policies and procedures
Guides, motivates, and directly manages all lab technicians within the department, establishes work schedules, assigns tasks, handles staffing matters, monitors the progress of projects, ensures deadlines are met, and manages the performance of assigned staff
Develops materials and maintains lab equipment for instruction, demonstration and general laboratory use
Assures all laboratory equipment and instrumentations are functioning properly and coordinates maintenance or repair as needed
Plans, organizes and implements procedures required to effectively operate the laboratory and maintain a high level of customer satisfaction
Monitors unit workload to ensure equity and appropriate use of financial resources
Prepares departmental budgets and assists with the annual budget planning process
Manages operational needs and monitors and controls expenses within the budget
Collaborates with College-wide committee(s) of peers to update and review lab safety guidelines and rules
Reviews weekly inventory of supplies and orders as necessary
Researches and evaluates new equipment for purchase recommendations
Assures that all personnel (students, faculty, and staff) are following safety protocol in compliance with local/state/federal regulatory requirements, particularly while experiments are in progress
Maintains accurate, and up to date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in appropriate data bases as specified by the Compliance and Risk Management department
Collaboratively assists faculty regarding laboratory preparations
Collaborates with faculty to coordinate and optimize laboratory facilities
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Laboratory-based Science + Significant related experience may substitute for education
Minimum of three years of demonstrated experience in a science laboratory setting
Demonstrated experience supervising, planning, assigning, scheduling and ensuring the quality of the work of others
Demonstrated experience monitoring a business area's budget
Demonstrated experience making sound decisions that affect a work unit or team
Demonstrated experience in a role requiring diverse problem-solving methods in a variety of situations
Possess working knowledge of Science concepts, practices, and procedures with the ability to use in varied situations as it pertains to the departmental focus
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to effectively completely work assignments independently
Possess excellent organizational and prioritization skills with demonstrated attention to detail
Ability to be creative and exercise initiative
Possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Possess strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to adjust to changing priorities and respond appropriately to deadlines
Ability to promote collaboration, teamwork, and involve all stakeholders in decision-making processes
Proven leadership skills and ability to foster a team environment and work collaboratively
Possess excellent customer service skills and proven ability to develop and sustain productive customer relationships
Critical thinker with ability to identify and implement efficiencies within daily operations
Demonstrated basic project management skills
Basic-level proficiency with Microsoft: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Ability to work accurately with great attention to detail
Ability to confidentially and discreetly handle subject matters requiring privacy and sensitivity
Ability to collaborate, persuade, gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas on significant projects
Ability to develop and maintain relationships with key contacts to enhance work flow and quality
Possess sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of students and the community
Preferred
Master's Degree in Biology (especially microbiology) or certification in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field
Demonstrated supervisory experience in a life-science laboratory setting
Demonstrated laboratory experience in an academic environment
