Responsibilities

Operate high-pressure boilers, large steam engines and boilers, air compressors, turbines, ventilating and refrigerating equipment, generators and other related equipment
Interpret specifications, blueprints, manufacturers' manuals, sketches or similar documents
Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work
Monitor and inspect equipment, computer terminals, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, safety devices, and meters to detect leaks or malfunctions and to ensure that equipment is operating efficiently and safely
Analyze problems and take appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems
Clean and lubricate boilers and auxiliary equipment and make minor adjustments as needed, using hand tools
Perform or arrange for repairs, such as complete overhauls, replacement of defective valves, gaskets, or bearings, or fabrication of new parts
Operate or tend stationary engines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment such as pumps, compressors, and air-conditioning equipment, to supply and maintain steam or heat for buildings, marine vessels, or pneumatic tools
Activate valves to maintain required amounts of water in boilers, to adjust supplies of combustion air, and to control the flow of fuel into burners
Test boiler water quality or arrange for testing and take necessary corrective action, such as adding chemicals to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits
Adjust controls and/or valves on equipment to provide power, and to regulate and set operations of system or industrial processes
Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels, and make adjustments to maintain required levels
Skillful in analyzing information concerning the efficient/economical operation of heating, ventilation, and refrigerating and air conditioning equipment in order to complete reports and/or make recommendations

Required

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
City of Detroit 1st Class Boiler Operator License
City of Detroit 1st Class Refrigeration License
Ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to work any shift and work overtime, including daily, weekends and holidays as required
Working knowledge of basic algebra concepts and principles sufficient to understand and apply basic trade formulas
A minimum of four (4) years of combined experience and training as a Steam Engineer or a documented and verified U.S. Department of Labor Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate as a Steam Engineer, including at least four (4) years' operating centralized steam and compressed air systems of comparable sizes to those at the plant in question
Ability to work from blueprints, drawings, layouts or other specifications to plan sequences of operations
Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts registering various aspects of boiler operation to ensure that boilers are operating properly
Skill in reading technical instructions related to the trade in order to comprehend written work instructions, equipment operating instructions, and/or other documents related to the job functions
Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work
Working knowledge of functions, operation, and servicing procedures for various HVAC systems, steam distribution, water treatment absorption/centrifugal refrigeration, water conditioning, pumps, piping, steam turbines, emergency generators, motor air compressors, and auxiliary equipment

Ability to work in confined spaces
Working knowledge of personal computer and software sufficient to review computerized building and maintenance management systems
In order to be considered for this position, your work experience as an Engineer -- Steam / Stationary Engineer in a manufacturing environment must be documented and verified
